A thunderous explosion rocked a Philadelphia neighborhood, injuring five people — one critically — and leveling at least two homes just hours into 2023, according to city fire officials.

The Sunday eruption that blew out windows and doors and sent cars flying — on top of the two wiped-out homes — appeared to be from a gas leak, fire officials said.

Two people were pulled from the rubble and three others were treated at the scene before being taken to the hospital, the Philadelphia Fire Department reported about the blast in the city’s Port Richmond section around 2:50 a.m.

“We had multiple gas leaks in the area, and the smell of gas coming from multiple areas,” said Philadelphia Assistant Fire Chief Charles Walker, according to Fox 29.

I'm reminded of this:

Up to 200 Killed in Nigerian Gas Pipeline Explosion

"ILADO, Nigeria – A ruptured gas pipeline exploded as villagers collected fuel in southwestern Nigeria Friday, killing up to 200 people and leaving charred bodies scattered around the blast site."

Interesting situation.

In their defense, they did contact the gas company a few times and were assured by the gas company itself that they were fine.

That alone should absolve them of any liability for the illegal gas line.

Unless there is more to the story than was printed there.

Sounds like they tried to jump out the gas meter. I have heard people even using bicycle inner tubes to link the incoming gas to the house system once the meter is removed.

Might be illegal hookups...

Ever since Bowers v. Hardwick was overturned, pretty much all hookups are legal these days.

A house is made to explode. That’s its meaning. Its purpose. Your life is empty because you spend it trying to stop the house from becoming. And for who? For what? You know what a house is, Jack, that doesn’t explode? It’s a cheap gold watch, buddy.

“What causes meth labs to explode?
Approximately 15 percent of meth labs are discovered as a result of a fire or explosion. Careless handling and overheating of highly volatile hazardous chemicals and waste and unsafe manufacturing methods cause solvents and other materials to burst into flames or explode.”

from ovc.ojp.gov online

There was one about 5 minutes walk away from the university library where I used to work. First reports said “possibly” but then “confirmed” as a large explosion in a meth lab run by a college student in the apartment above a Jimmy John. Color photo in the news showed huge orange plumes of bright flame still forced out of all the exploded windows under pressure in the building.

My original joke made up for the occasion:
“Are those subs toasted?”
“They are now.”
