Agree on collard greens. Hoppin’ John with black-eyed peas, smoked ham hocks, collard greens and served over rice. Good for luck.
Well, my husband is of Polish/Eastern Eurpean descent, so cabbage and kielbasa it is!
I would actually prefer collards, they do better with strong sausages.
There ya go. Ham hocks preferred to ham steak, but this year, I’m giving in. (Truth be told… I didn’t have any ham hocks in my fridge…but a ham steak is sitting there looking at me.) Black-eyed peas and rice also on hand, besides the collards. Don’t forget the cornbread!!

Cuban traditional meal is roast pork loin, rice and black beans plus plantains for good luck. Wife makes a layered salad to go with the meal.
