It’s no coincidence that pork chops and sauerkraut are traditional holiday dishes, especially on New Year’s Day.
This meal symbolizes wealth and prosperity for the coming year in German-American culture

Kisslings was all out so had to get the silver floss. Country ribs. The key is straining the kraut and adding an apple.
I really wish DFW had a good Polish restaurant.
To keep the moslems away...
Down here in South Florida it is LECHON. Basically pork with CRISPY skins on top of rice. Love it. We had it last weekend and I am hoping my in-laws make it available again tomorrow. (I take care of Thanksgiving turkey (smoked) and Fourth of July and Labor Day barbecues. The in-laws take care of the food for Christmas, New Years, and Easter.
I recall a Polish restaurant near where I grew up. It was in the city of Hamtramak, Michigan. They made the best smelling braided rye bread. Some items may have been from Germany, such as the Pumpernickle Bread.
The New Hamtramack is all Muslim now. Everything changes.
Spiral-cut Brown-Sugar Ham, Sauerkraut & Garlic-Mashed Potatoes for us, maybe some sort of greens or a salad (tried to do Black-eyed peas once, but met with utter failure) — & we used to watch the “Mummers Parade”, but they’ve kinda lost the magic on that ...
Yep, but people say Dutch here in PA.(phonetically)
Germany is Germany, Deutschland, Alemania, Prussia, and others…
Agree on the Reuben comments — best to make your own with extra kraut and sauce (plus more on the side if you really want to pile it on) .. and fry it all up on the griddle with plenty of butter!
The reason PORK is the meat is that hogs always root forward and forward is for prosperity.
better than black eyed peas
kielbasa, kraut, caraway seed, granny smith apple... delish
Black eyed peas and collard greens.
We lived in Charleston, SC several years ago
They ate Hoppin John for luck there
a red bean and rice dish
The only way!
I don’t like pork and detest sauerkraut. Gonna stick with 2022.
We used to have rice and black eyed peas and cornbread.
Pork might be on the menu but as ham or smoked or fresh sausage.
Tennessee thing maybe.
Maybe you do. My family tradition is bean and ham soup, using the leftover hambone from Christmas dinner.

Sauerkraut and falafel.

Yup. I’ve been in the Lititz area many times. 😁
