Woman Drives On Frozen Canal, Eventually Plunges Into Water, Blames It On GPS
CarScoops ^ | 12/27/2022 | Michael Gautheir

Indianapolis residents saw a bizarre sight on Christmas and it had nothing to do with Santa or his reindeer.

Quite the opposite as the Indianapolis Fire Department revealed a 33 year old woman drove down an embankment and then started driving on a frozen canal. This appears to have gone on for a while as the department said she “continued north on the canal until she came to the dead end at 10th Street, where she turned around [and] headed south.”

Her luck eventually ran out as the vehicle broke through the ice and plunged into the water. The fire department said several bystanders jumped into action and assisted the woman, who waited in the lobby of a nearby hotel after escaping from the vehicle. She was then checked out by medics, before being transported to the hospital.

Needless to say, authorities had plenty of questions and she told firefighters her GPS took her onto the canal. While the frozen waterway does have a road-like look, there appears to have been more going on.

According to CBS 42 and Fox 59, the woman was arrested for drunk driving. There’s no immediate word on how intoxicated the woman was, but she was apparently clueless even after driving down the embankment and onto the canal. The scene shocked onlooker Mason Brauchla, who told the Fox affiliate “I couldn’t believe … the ice was even supporting their car for that long.” He went onto estimate the woman was driving approximately 30 mph.

Good thing she had a GPS, otherwise she wouldn’t have had anything else in the car to blame.

If I blindly obeyed my GPS, I would total my vehicle nearly every time I drive. The GPS lady will frequently tell me to turn right... off a steep embankment, or left into a lake.

My dad was a retired USA tug boat Chief Warrant officer. During the Korean War he was a port pilot at the port of Inchon. He always got funny looks on the bridge of ships he was piloting into port. He would tell them not to worry, he was a blue grass pilot and when he smelled bluegrass, it was time to back her down.

So, yeah, remember when 5G hit and all the nav systems in older cars, with things like Navistar, quit working? They will always be doing this to us-—killing off the old stuff so we have to buy new. Maybe this gal was driving an old Buick?

“They both use the same sources for data.”

Thanks for chiming in, Captain Obvious.

But paper maps don’t get the signals blocked or degraded, they don’t require a power source, and you don’t have to rip your vehicle apart to take it with if if you suffer a breakdown in the middle of nowhere.

Mapping companies have always included bogus data (streets etc) in their maps so they could prove copyright violations in order to prove the theft of their IP.

if the GPS companies or their data sources were stealing maps and including the bogus data than they should be sued.

“So, yeah, remember when 5G hit and all the nav systems in older cars, with things like Navistar, quit working? “

Nav systems don’t require a cell connection. Navistar builds diesel trucks and tractors.

“if the GPS companies or their data sources were stealing maps and including the bogus data than they should be sued.”

GPS companies don’t distribute maps. They provide the equipment to interpret the GPS signals into lat/long positions.

Major companies say they do not include bogus data although there are some instances predating electronic maps but they would not cause routing problems.
