Famed mountain lion P-22 will not be put on display at L.A. Natural History Museum

The remains of P-22, the famous mountain lion who roamed the Hollywood Hills for more than a decade, have been transported to the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County.

What happens next, however, is unclear.

Museum officials were joined by descendants from several Native American tribes who led a blessing ceremony Friday “welcome P-22 back to his homeland” from the San Diego Zoo where he was euthanized last weekend, the museum posted to Twitter.

“Right now, we are in dialogue with Native communities, including multiple Chumash and Tongva Tribes, to help navigate this unprecedented situation,” NHM said.

Southern California’s Native community opposes P-22 being taxidermied and put on display since they consider cougars sacred.

Wildlife officials decided to capture P-22 earlier this month after it attacked and killed a leashed dog and was exhibiting other signs of distress. Veterinarians determined the cougar had suffered severe injuries likely caused by a collision with a vehicle and was also suffering from age-related illnesses.

Many people were sad that P-22 was euthanized...They participated in the memorial hike in Griffiths Park...By the way, tribes want P-22 buried in Griffiths Park...

By the way, P-51 and P-47 were good fighters during WW2...For US Army Air Force...

What actual, bonafide claim do these Indians have on the animal's carcass?

Or can I just assert, "That stray animal you shot on your land is considered sacred by my group - give it here!"

Regards,

The injuns have no legal claim to it. If they want it, they can pony up a casino.

I'd like to see the carcass turned into an talking animatronic exhibit: "Howdy Pard!, welcome to the museum!"

It's an animal carcass, not a religious artifact.
I guess they need to ship The Ghost and The Darkness back from The Field Museum in Chicago to East Africa....

Not sure which one this is.

I’m not aware that the Indians did anything for P-22 while he was alive. What’s their sudden claim on his body when he’s dead?

Or can I just assert,

That is precisely what happens in this case [and others of the same genre]. The woke response is to defer without question while mumbling apologies.

Re: "Right now, we are in dialogue with Native communities..."

If we had depended on Native communities to record American history, we would still be sitting around camp fires listening to old men tell fictional stories.

Stuff the lion.

Display it in the Museum.

Yep, looks sacred. Don't stuff it or anything.

What a remarkable story, even without the fabricated drama of the Val Kilmer movie. I had read a version of the saga in Mannix’s ‘Tales of the African Frontier’.

No, not completely. And thank goodness they didn’t rewrite the story to tell how the gay lions killed the evil what cis-genders and then went on to live happily everafter. :/

“Right now, we are in dialogue with Native communities, including multiple Chumash and Tongva Tribes, to help navigate this unprecedented situation,”

Here’s the history of early tribes and large predatory animals. They killed every one of them they could as quick as they could. Large predators were not only a threat they were also competition.

It’s not sacred. It’s a friggin’ cat. I am so tired of everything being elevated to a higher level.

In reading the story THE MANEATERS OF TSAVO, the two lions shot were maneless lions, as shown in the photo, but not the movie The Ghost and the Darkness.
