Thanks to Libs of Tik Tok, we can all get glimpses of what passes for entertainment in the world of drag queens: strutting, writhing, and coyly obscene chit-chat as they crudely mock actual women.

I recently heard the term “woman face” used in connection with drag queens, equating it with disparagement of woman, much like “black face”. Yet somehow, this twisted culture embraces the disparagement and mockery of women as being perfectly fine.

It's not just leftists who embrace brutalist ugliness. Last night, I attended a midnight Christmas service at a church that is part of an evangelical denomination that many conservative activists belong to. Although the pastor's message was uplifting, I found the "praise" music that they performed to be all but unlistenable. Traditional Christmas songs such as "Silent Night," "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" and "God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen" do not lend themselves very well to a rock beat.

I was in a fast-food restaurant earlier today, and the music was a live show from a local (Seattle) radio station, i.e., it was not some form of "Muzak."

I was struck - once again - by the banality, repetition, and lack of beauty in most of today's music. The music is mostly percussive, with no melody at all, virtually no structure or narrative, sparse instrumentation, and either a sing-song repetition of insipid lyrics or a rap-like aggressive insolence.

Some of us old-timers spend a few afternoons a week in the local bar, and we enjoy playing the jukebox. We play a wide variety of music: big band music, rock and pop music from the 50s through about 2010 (or even later), country, blues, and some jazz. We play very little heavy metal and virtually no rap or hip-hop, except maybe as a joke. It is common for non-regulars to comment on how much they enjoy the music, even thank us for it. Even younger people say that the older music is way better than most of what is coming out now.
