The NFL pushed back the start time of Sunday's Tennessee Titans and Houston Texans game in Nashville one hour due to rolling blackouts in the area caused by bitterly cold weather that strained the electrical grid. Kickoff for Texans-Titans is now scheduled for 2:02 p.m. ET.
"Due to the extreme weather and power outages affecting our region, kickoff for today's game has been postponed one hour to 1 p.m. CT," the Titans said in a statement Saturday. "This decision was made in partnership with the NFL, Office of Emergency Management, Nashville Electric Service and the Mayor's Office in an abundance of caution to ensure that the game would not negatively impact our community in any way. We are exploring every possibility to minimize non-essential power around the stadium. Gates are currently open and fans are welcome to enter.
"At all times, the operation of the game remained secondary to the well-being of our community and we can't thank the OEM and NES enough for their dedication to the safety of our neighbors."

QUICK! More solar mills and wind panels! STAT!
I’m in Houston, for the good of the country Texans just forfeit the game and come home. Why waste the electricity?
A blackout is Texans only hope winning.....
Riot!
I wonder what has changed...?
It would help to plug the EVs.
Just imagine that happening on the day of the iconic Green Bay - Dallas Championship Game, I think it was in ‘67, temperature was -16 IIRC.
Since it’s a day game couldn’t they just play as scheduled, even if there were blackouts? Yes I know you need electricity to run the TV cameras and everything but the game itself could still be played.
As a suffering Broncos fan who sympathizes with what you’re going through, I would think all of the TVs that will suddenly be turned off midway through the first quarter would compensate.
Houston vs. Houston. Somebody’s gotta lose.
No we just had regular blackouts back then. What’s changed is we have a much smarter system able to see problems coming and handle them. This is how we avoid things like New York 77.
“smarter system”
Smarter should be nuclear and coal. I say we have WOKE systems and management. ‘Smarter’ is a word to be omitted in the next dictionary.
Actually the Texans should have beaten the Cowboys and the Chiefs the last two weeks.
If they wait an hour, it’s going to be maybe 1 degree warmer.
There have been blackouts in East TN also.
In this case the smartness is detecting overloads and avoiding cascade failure. Doesn’t matter how you make electricity, when things get intense ANYTHING can get overloaded.
The Original Ice Bowl. I remember it well.
Good point!
When I grew up, football games were blacked out all the time. Nothing new here.
When you have ample reserves you don’t leave your paying customers in the dark and to freeeze.
