Are you up in Ft Collins or (worse) Greeley? If so, you live in a special kind of cold, second only to Laramie.

Iโ€™m jealous!

Don't mean to do that, but I do feel lucky to have lived my life in the West - first CA, then AZ, now NM.

If it weren't for the out-of-control crime and car theft, ABQ would be near the top of the best places to live. I still like it though. Many, many sunny days.

Almost moved to the arctic regions on Minnesota and environs but thankfully, NM had reciprocity so I could be licensed to practice law here.

It's funny: when it's, say, 60ยฐ outside, it'll be 60ยฐ inside, but when it's 10ยฐ below outside, we fire up the stoves to 85 or so inside.
...and, since the oven is fired anyway, Mother goes ahead and makes cornbread, which, with sorghum molasses and homemade butter makes me feel sorry for folks who have to ride out winter storms in town.

"My dad built a bin for the coal. He later expanded it, added shelves and turned it into a fruit cellar. Mom canned so it was great."

Our coal furnace was smack dab in the middle of the basement. It was there when we bought the house. There were two coal bins across from it. We only used one. Our furnace looked like a big monster with all the arms extending out from it. We had the old square, heavy metal floor vents. Our cat slept on the living room vent all winter.

-5 F here across the border west of Cincinnati Friday morning. Had to pour hot water along the car door edges (avoiding the glass): car started right up. New $200 battery several months ago, I have always bought large capacity (CCA and reserve) rated vehicle batteries.Deaf battery is no fun.
Places with heat pumps were cold-hearted pump doesn’t work when needed most.
Warmed to +2 this morning around 8:30 a.m.
Kerosene heater running, burning $$, kerosene almost $6 gallon.
Thanks Demoncrats.

It was raining yesterday. When the rain stopped and the temps started to drop below freezing, I made a point of going to the car with paper towels to ensure the rubber door seals were dry.

No problem with frozen doors this morning.

Low was 23 at my place in north central Fla and it aint warming up much on this bright sunny day! The daytime high is predicted to be only 41! At noon it is only 35 with a brisk NW wind 12-17 mph!!!!

Did a walk around to look for leaking outside pipes around 11 and didnt find any but it is probably still too cold for any water leaks to show.

Plus this arctic air will stay much longer than usual. 5 mornings of below freezing predicted. And after that temps warm to about 80 for several days in a row.

Crazy weather!

We had the big monster, too. We eventually went to oil and then gas. Our vents were on the wall. We had a BIG cold air return in the entrance area. House was built circa 1904...milk box and all. Life was pretty simple back then. You didn’t need a phone attached to your head back then...

Last night my wife made a minestrone soup. Simmering on the stove for hours, it helped warm the house.

Sounds a lot like our house, built in 84. Wood stove in the family room downstairs. We only have a fire in the evening and then let it go out. We just got the generac 3 years ago.

I live in town here in Western Pa. We got hit with it all. Went to windchill last night of -45. So I heat with oil radiators and got the 3rd backup one out because the other two couldn't keep up with temp drop. I'm good now but once today the power flickered for a moment.

These oil filled radiators are the closest thing to wood stove heat as they radiate outward the heat and are much warmer than the fans and other types of space heaters. I love them!

Youโ€™re cornbread and molasses homemade butter sound wonderful. I imagine it's pretty cozy where you are.

... When I turn up the heat, the house takes a little while to warm up. Sometimes it takes until late April before it warms up.

I've read that half a dozen times, and laughed every one. Norm MacDonald good.

I’ve also heard from people who have lived in Ca. and Florida say the West is the best place to live for warmer weather areas....and once there they love it.
