I live in an early-60's-build house. For the most part, it's wonderful, but it has very little insulation. I've been meaning to rectify that, but didn't yet.
So, after spending a warm night buried under blankets, I wake up to a shivering-cold set of rooms, all under 60 degrees F.... even though me and the missus set all the baseboard heating to max and left both space heaters going.
So, I decide to go to Walmart. I find two pallets of space heaters, one of them Infra-red, and one of them Oil-radiant. Both are electric.
I go ahead and put one of each in my cart, get a few food items, then decide to pick up one more Infra-red heater.... maybe 5 minutes later.
BOTH PALLETS ARE CLEANED OUT... when I get to the register, everyone had a pair of those heaters in their cart.
All the wildlife hid from yesterday’s cold winds. I bought salt when it was still 40 degrees and the pallet was full. It being cold in Pennsylvania is nothing new, but going from 40 degrees down to 6 in the span of 12 hours is a bit different.
The money we spent on our ultra-high efficiency gas boiler and programable thermostat is the best $$ we’ve spent on a home improvement.
Currently -1 degrees in Albuquerque, supposed be a balmy 13 this afternoon. Keep the wood stove going and stay inside.
lol j/k
The good thing about cold snaps like this is they kill the bugs under the ground. Spring should be a lot nicer without them.
The thermostat for my heat pump has a button to push that will tell you the outside temperature. It never got above 0F all day yesterday, and before bed last night, it read -199F. Damn, that’s cold! But it warmed up a lot overnight. This morning it was +6F.
Immodium could help with that stool that won’t shut off.
:-D
Nobody cares about your travails. Get a life.
“we had a cold spell like this in December a few years ago right here in East Tennessee...what changed?”
Woke-ness.
So says Cocaine Mitch.
High of seven. Low of Antarctica.
12 degrees in Rome, N.Y. at the moment.
No thanks. I had one, but I didn't like it, so I brought it back for store credit.
Shoot, I guess I better not say too much. You might know ‘em!!!
just in case TVA cuts power.””
Same here... insulated, good windows, heat pump, gas logs, infra red room heaters, but only one wife here with her mini golden doodle for the bed.
Here in TN with TVA and the hydroelectric dams and coal fired electrical plants we haven’t had these black outs until all the yankees and CA nuts move here and builders built thousands of medium size cheap houses on the farm land. Now biden is busing in all these illegals from the border. Our infra structure cannot handle it; grid, roads and schools.
>>Yesterday it got colder in my house so I looked at my thermostat
It was no longer on Heat at 73 but Axillary Heat at 69
I yelped EEEEK !!! I thought it was broken
Oh No !!!
I had never seen that before !!!
I think its an automatic back up or something if the cold goes off the grid...
I put it back to Heat at 73 and it has been fine since
SCARY !!!!
Hunkered down in SE TN
My home has two electric heat systems. The first is most efficient at temps above 40; nearly useless below that. The auxiliary heat costs more to run, but is needed when outdoor temps drop below 40 degrees. It also kicks in if the set temp is more than 4 degrees above the current indoor temp, which is why lowering the heat when leaving the house doesn’t always save you money. Psst... check your heating bill.
Merry Christmas, Laz, to you and the Missus (does she realize you NEVER told us about her until now?).
In Omaha, NE. It is 6 degrees now. I think it was below zero all of Thursday, got to about 2 yesterday. I have been lucky to have no reason to go out since Wednesday morning. We got less than 2” of snow, and the wind has calmed down.
The house is set for 69, but upstairs is more like 64. We have electric blanket, which is heavenly. Our utility bills already jumped about 20% earlier this year, and they are saying another increase is coming soon. This is the Biden plan, it seems.
We already celebrated Christmas with kids/grandkids, and will have a nice spaghetti dinner tomorrow night. Kind of anxious to move on to 2023.
I remember when extreme weather didn’t get blamed on Republicans and MAGA supporters.....
Blame Nashville, mostly. That area has not kept up with growing demand and the states where the difference was made up are using that excess capacity for their own citizens.
Oh, don’t worry, I hate EVERYONE from Upstate New York. :^)
I had to be careful about that, just in case I could get another Freeperette to hit it with me.
