The Navy has always used rank, including in boot camp. Calling an enlisted leader “Sir” would bring a quick rebuke such as “Sir?! I work for a living you sh!tbird!”, or “Don’t call me sir you numbnuts! I ain’t your %@#& %!*+# daddy!”
Not in the 60s. If it wasn’t a recruit you called it, “Sir”. CPOs, Seamen..... your first word was “Sir”. Unless you wanted to join a marching party.
