Japan reverts to max nuclear power to tackle energy, climate
Associated Press ^ | December 22, 2022 | Mari Yamaguchi

Japan on Thursday adopted a new policy promoting greater use of nuclear energy to ensure a stable power supply amid global fuel shortages and to reduce carbon emissions — a major reversal of its phase-out plan since the Fukushima crisis.

The new policy says Japan must maximize the use of existing nuclear reactors by restarting as many of them as possible and prolonging the operating life of old reactors beyond their 60-year limit, and by developing next-generation reactors to replace them.

Anti-nuclear sentiment and safety concerns rose sharply in Japan after the 2011 Fukushima disaster, and restart approvals have since come slowly under stricter safety standards. Utility companies have applied for restarts at 27 reactors in the past decade. Seventeen have passed safety checks and only 10 have resumed operations. That was in line with Japan’s earlier plan to phase out nuclear energy by 2030.

In a reversal, the new policy says nuclear power provides stable output and serves “an important role as a carbon-free baseload energy source in achieving supply stability and carbon neutrality” and pledges to “sustain use of nuclear power into the future.” …

The new ones leave almost no radiation. They are very nice.

I’m glad Japan is going forward with an all-out use of nuclear power. Using the false threat of climate change may cause greater support for going nuclear. However, I see energy independence a better justification.

COVID woke people up. Just In Time and long global supply lines can no longer be trusted to be the most cost effective way to run a country.

So long as Japan can guarantee its supply of uranium, or better yet thorium, it should try to generate as much energy of its own as possible.

It is silly to depend on oil, coal, gas, etc. if those resources require long untroubled supply lines.

japan should be looking into geothermal.

it’s the best solution for endless clean energy on demand (unlike solar and wind)

gigawatt geothermal facilities are much easier to build than nuclear plants and take less time.

Rationality wins over emotion in Japan?

Imagine that.

Unfortunately, I can’t imagine that happening here. Meanwhile, you cannot power modern civilization on wind and solar.

A mixture of both.

In my opinion, if I was in charge of the world, I would hydrocarbons for vehicles and nuclear for homes and renewables for personal use.

So, please send me a campaign donation and remeber to vote for me in the first glianal election.

Just wait about 10 seconds. The “green” consortium is weighing what method they will employ in order to stop any nuclear programs that will set the power needs of humanity free to grow and flourish. Always remember that the progressive green people loath humans and will starve and freeze anyone who tries to stop them from decimating the human race. Of course THAT isn’t what they tell you but the results of what they do says it all.

When you need a justification, anything will do. No doubt the Japanese are tiring of paying through the nose for fossil fuels when nuclear is right at hand.

“Opponents say nuclear power...can cause immeasurable damage in an accident or in conflict, as in Russia’s attacks on a Ukrainian nuclear plant (WHICH IS OCCUPIED BY RUSSIAN SOLDIERS).”

Somehow I doubt that Japan will shell nuclear plants they occupy, so calm down AP.

“I thought greenies didn’t approve of nuclear energy.”

They don’t - but those who want clean, copious and cost-effective energy love it😎

That plus family is why I find every trip that I make there to be wholesome and therapeutic. Just got back from spending a month there.

It’s the only logical, rational choice they have at this time. Sounds like they’re awake and smelling the coffee, now.

The Fukushima crisis didn’t teach them anything they sit on a constant earth quake zone.

Considering the very serious disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant in 2011, Japan has seen the reality that nuclear power generation is the best answer to switch away from carbon-based energy.

Our American nuclear incident, Three Mile Island was nothing in comparison. No one died, very little radiation was released, yet the hysterical ant-nuke left have made it almost impossible for our country to make electrical power that way. Some say fusion will come, but that’s 20+ years away, if ever.

And always will be or so it was said in my plasma physics class 35+ years ago!
