Charlbi Dean's Cause of Death Confirmed by Coroner After Her Sudden Death at 32

A New York City coroner confirms to PEOPLE that the actress died due to a complication following a common surgery that she had 10 years before her death

Charbli Dean's cause of death has been determined by a New York City Medical Examiner.

The Triangle of Sadness actress –– whose full name is Charlbi Dean Kriek –– died from an unexpected and sudden illness in August. She was 32.

At the time, the illness was not revealed.

A spokesperson for the New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner confirmed to PEOPLE on Wednesday that she died of bacterial sepsis.

The sepsis "was a complication from asplenia (the absence of a spleen) due to "remote blunt trauma to her torso," the spokesperson tells PEOPLE.

The South African actress' death was ruled an accident.

Her bacterial sepsis was caused after she was infected with a bacteria known as Capnocytophaga. While the infection is rare, there are different species of Capnocytophaga that develop in the mouths of humans and which are also present in the mouths of dogs and cats, according to the CDC. People with autoimmune issues and without spleens are particularly susceptible.

It is not clear if an animal bite or lick was responsible for the model's infections as the medical examiner has not made her full autopsy public.

I'll just toss this in...

SARS-CoV-2 vaccination and ITP in patients with de novo or preexisting ITP

...ITP may worsen in preexisting ITP or be identified de novo post–SARS-CoV2 vaccination; both situations responded well to treatment. Proactive monitoring of patients with known ITP, especially those postsplenectomy and with more refractory disease, is indicated.

Wonder what the death certificate lists for immediate and underlying...

People without a spleen are much more susceptible to certain bacterial infections that can lead to fulminant infection and rapid death

You can lose your spleen because of a fall and hitting something. It doesn’t kill you and I believe life goes on as normal, but I suspect there can be complications down the road years later.

I went to the hospital with a severe pain in my side, and had to have my gall bladder removed. Now everything I eat makes me fart.

usually those without a spleen (or whose spleen was destroyed by Sickle Cell disease) have problems with some bacteria: We used to give them penicillin to prevent this.

I have never heard of this germ, but on the other hand, they keep changing the names of common bacteria...

https://www.akc.org/expert-advice/health/capnocytophaga-dog-bacteria/

from that article:

Many species of capnocytophaga inhabit the mouths of cats and dogs and also live in the mouths of some humans. These bacteria don’t bother our pets, and they rarely infect humans. Experts compare the odds of contracting these bacteria from your pet to getting struck by lightning. Extremely rare, but potentially deadly when it occurs.

Unlike lightning, however, capnocytophaga does discriminate. Healthy people can get the bacteria, but individuals who have difficulty fighting off infections are at an increased risk, especially if they are bitten by a dog.

because of copyright I won’t post the entire article.
