Its not Moscow - these are Wagner Group mercenaries - the boss recruited them form Russia’s prisons. This serves to empty the prisons out and save Moscow money.
They have a 2 month contract with Prigozhin and their sentences will be commuted, but if the retreat they will be shot, or like one troop, who was captured and returned in a POW exchange, have their heads bashed in with a sledgehammer. Video on the internet somewhere.
The idea Prigozhin said was for them to kill high grade material (Ukrainian troops) and die because they are low grade material. Taking Bakhmut is not the objective. Killing UA troops, in this war of attrition, is. This is the exchange both Putin and Prigozhin are willing to make - the number of Russian that die is not relevant to their calculations.
Wars of Attrition are like this and have not been seen in modern times. However, Attrition is the Russian way of war - everyone and everything is expendable to achieve the objective. 100K dead or 2 million dead - all the same to Russia.

Well, it’s been posted thousands of times here in recent months. I don’t pay much attention to exactly which Russian propagandist happens to be posting it.

Yes, but that’s only viable if they are actually achieving a worthwhile objective, which doesn’t appear to be the case. Which is why I say they resort to this tactic simply because they can, not because it’s effective. It’s just the only tactic they have available which might potentially still be effective.
Anyone who is against spending 100 billion on the Piano Player is a “Russian propagandist”, in the eyes of the neoconneds.

You don’t understand - it does not matter - the objective is for Russia’s private army, the Wagner Group, to exchange low value human material for high value human material, according to it’s owner, Prigozhin.
Western military thought does not apply. Forget Western military tactics and theories if you want to make sense of what is going on the Ukraine battlefront. Two Soviet armies clashing. A little on and a big one. The little one has lots of allies with a huge industrial base, the big one has none of that.
The Wagner Group was the most effective military in Russia - regular troops are just Soviet Army knock offs. WG troops, at the start of the war and until recently, used common sense, initiative, spirit, and had no red tape. Now, Prigozhin is helping Putin save money and resources by getting rid of low value material (criminals) in an efficient manner, while gaining the benefit of killing Ukrainians troops.
Why? Because Russia has no more trained professional troops - they all died or where put out with horrible wounds in the first few months.

Back in the Soviet days - yes, but no longer. They were totally dependent on Western companies which have now all pulled out.

I understand their reasoning, but that doesn’t make their reasoning valid. You can shrug off Russia pursuing an irrational strategy by saying “well, that’s just Russia” but they are still pursuing an irrational strategy.
For example:

This still isn’t an actual efficient use of the resources (manpower) that is at their disposal. Just killing a few Ukrainians here and there is a waste, because if they were implementing the tactic properly, they could be killing a lot more Ukrainians AND achieving actual strategic objectives as well. But they’re not, even though they could accomplish that with the exact same resources. Of course that is assuming there actually are any competent officers left in the Russian army who could properly implement a human wave attack. That might be an overestimation on my part.
