Line painting and other finishing touches continued Tuesday at the new Fern Hollow Bridge in the city’s East End, with a dedication ceremony planned Wednesday and completion of bridge reconstruction work anticipated Thursday, officials said.
A date for reopening the bridge to traffic has not been set, according to Pennsylvania Department of Transportation spokesman Steve Cowan, but it was anticipated it would be within a week. The busy, 500-foot Forbes Avenue bridge, which connected Squirrel Hill to Point Breeze and Park Place, collapsed onto a popular hiking trail about 100 feet below the road in Frick Park in January.
Ten people were hurt in the collapse, but there were no fatalities. Among the injured were Pittsburgh Regional Transit articulating bus driver Daryl Luciani and passenger Matt Evans.
Gov. Tom Wolf will cut the ribbon for the new bridge Wednesday morning and Mayor Ed Gainey will be among the speakers along with U.S. Department of Transportation Director of Bipartisan Infrastructure Law Implementation Katie Thomson. Personnel from the Federal Highway Administration also will be on hand.
The $25 million rebuild was done in less than a year, two years faster than such projects usually take.
Fern Hollow Bridge was rated in poor condition for more than 10 years and the collapse prompted inspections of the city’s 22 bridges for the possibility of failure. The Mayor’s office didn’t respond to questions about the inspections or condition of those bridges.
The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the bridge failure and results were expected in 2023. The Fern Hollow Bridge was built in the early 1970s.

So what does that tell us about “infrastructure” projects?
obama/biden trillions were to pay for the bridge and road repairs. Never happened.
