I used to have a big old “outside dog”.
He had a big-enough dog house and I put carpet flaps on the door opening.

In the Winter I would get him a bale of hay, open it and stuff the whole thing inside the dog house. He would only come out to eat and relieve himself, but otherwise loved it in there. You could look out and see only his nose poking out between the carpet flaps. If a vehicle drove in, he would simply bark from the door of his comfy dog house.

The second year I did that, I plopped the bale down in front of his house and he immediately jumped right up on top of it and stood there, as if to say: “My damn bale of hay”.

My old girl loves straw, but I haven’t been able to find any good local clean straw this year. She’s has allergies so I stay away from hay for her. My dogs before her got hay in the houses and they were the same. I put her in the shed the first night because the wind was going to be blowing 20mph. The second night the wind was less than half, so I let her stay in her yard in her doghouse. She did fine.

When my old Bloodhound has his eye surgery (eyelid lift), I had to keep him in the house with a cone on his head. He got so hot that he had hot spots where the cone touched. The Vet office has unheated kennels so he spent the last week there. He bloated one winter so I covered my kennel with tarps and put him in there. It was my dog hospital. He lived to 12 and that’s really old for a 140-pound dog.
