Robert Barnes: There might be forthcoming news on the Speaker issue. I talked to some folks in Trump camp yesterday. McCarthy has been left with a small majority and there are enough votes left to prevent him from from becoming Speaker. Now there are no votes to make someone else the Speaker. So Trump had decided to stick with McCarthy because he viewed McCarthy as better than the unknown alternative. However it has been clear that there are at least 5 members of the Republican caucus that will not vote for McCarthy. That means that there would be no Speaker come January.
And then you've got various shenanigans by Democrats trying to talk about putting Liz Cheney in as Speaker. This is all because the Speaker of the House in America does not have to be elected to the House of Representatives. It can literally be any citizen. There had been talk by Steve Bannon going back a couple years of making Trump Speaker of the House. Trump said he wasn't interested; made it clear. However because of the unusual circumstances currently pending people in the Trump camp are urging him to offer a compromise....which is that Trump would become Speaker of the House for a hundred days. So not for two years; but for 100 days while Republicans work out their leadership issues to avoid the scenario where Republicans have no Speaker of the House come January.
I and some others have encouraged Trump to take that path for many reasons. One it is better than having no Speaker of the House. Second it is better than having Liz Cheney or some democrat snooker in which would be a complete embarrassment to the Republican party. There are things that Kevin McCarthy needs to improve upon that haven't yet been accepted. This would give him the opportunity to do so. It would be Trump vs. Biden for the first 100 days. It would definitely attract news and drama and would give Trump a platform to be on the policy side of the equation. Because even though he made a very, very big tech proposal last week that was over shadowed in part by his NFC trading cards. People forget that he loves to make money. He is in that business as much as he is in any business.
So this would put him in a more serious role...Speaker of the House. The media would have to cover him on a daily basis. He would be the leader of the Republican effort for the first 100 days. Biden would maybe have to meet with him. I mean it would send the democrats into a total tizzy. The media would be off the rails. And it would rally the Republican base at a key time when they need it and it would show Trump helping out the party at a key juncture that would restore some confidence on the part of some of the people who are wavering on the institutional side of the political equation with all the media pushing for DeSantis or someone else to challenge him .
And I was suggesting that if he were Speaker of the House for 100 days I would purpose that he go over to Ukraine and cut a peace deal. Would Ukraine say no to Trump visiting? How would they handle that...the Speaker of the House. All of a sudden they want more....50 billion plus and they're not willing to let the Speaker of the House come over there? I mean he could disrupt all kinds of institutional establishment objectives while rallying the base, while serving the party, while helping himself all in one clean boot.
So don't be surprised if over the next week or weeks before the Speaker vote if you start to see.... Apparently Trump has told some folks that he is willing to entertain the idea. He previously said no. Now as he thinks through his options he is now thinking "Why not?" and he could add Speaker to the House to his Trump famous resume. So that would be a fun curve ball in the new year that could really disrupt the establishment's objectives if that comes about and it has a much better chance of coming about than people currently know.
I like the idea of Trump as Speaker, he could do a lot of damage to the establishment while saving the Republic in 100 days!!!
Because it is the best move I can think of for the Republicans...it will ever happen.
