Emergency Medical Services spokesman Njabulo Dlungele said the wave slammed a group of swimmers against a pier at Durban’s North Beach around 5 p.m. local time.
The EThekwini Municipality said that those who died were swept out to sea by rip currents and drowned.
At least 17 people were taken to area hospitals to be treated for injuries sustained during the incident. The patients were said to be in serious or critical condition.
More than 35 lifeguards participated in rescue efforts, attending to more than 100 people affected by the massive wave, according to the municipality.

Whoa! I got caught in rip tide once, when I ignored warning about swimming dangers.
Spend enough time in / on / close to the ocean and one will experience a “rogue wave”.
Mine were in the Pacific Ocean, Central American coast.
Watched one from a safe location in total awe.
The other while scuba diving with a good buddy in 40’ of water off a rocky island. Cuts, scrapes, and banged up with some gear ruined. We cheated the Reaper for sure.

The whole universe is a sea of waves made of particles of energy. The big-bang itself might have been the biggest rogue wave ever. While statistically unlikely, when time doesn’t exist, all the rogue waves happen all at once.

When I was a young teenager I had a friend whose mother moved them from NYC to Florida to escape crime and drugs (this was 40+ years ago).

One of my dad’s best friends in upstate NY had moved to Mass for a new job. Their son died in a blizzard after he got stuck on a fence. He was walking through a field to visit his girlfriend’s house not far away.
Being a parent can quickly turn into tragedy no matter what good decisions one makes. RIP.
Circa 1979. Working a North Sea semi-submersible drilling rig. It was a big storm in the North Sea. Wave were running about 40 feet which is big even in the North Sea. A monster Rouge Wave hit us. It cleaned off the helideck 115 feet above the water.
That’s very true. And so many of us were on the edge of catastrophe many times in our young lives and yet cheated the grim reaper.
