Vikings Complete Largest Comeback in NFL History With Wild OT Win Over Colts
New York Post ^ | December 17, 2022 | Brian Wacker

The Colts blocked a punt for a touchdown, scored on an interception of quarterback Kirk Cousins and raced out to a huge lead, but it was the Vikings who made history on Saturday.

Minnesota completed the biggest comeback in NFL history, rallying from a 33-0 halftime deficit to beat Indianapolis, 39-36, on Greg Joseph’s 40-yard field goal with three seconds remaining in overtime at U.S. Bank Stadium.

The wild and improbable victory surpassed the 32-point margin former Bills quarterback and ex-Colts head coach Frank Reich led in a 1993 wild-card playoff game against the Houston Oilers.

I was telling that to my wife as the Vikings made their comeback.

It is one thing to lose a big lead when up against Brady with a decent team around him. You would at least be in good company.

But Kirk Cousins? He is the definition of a slightly above average quarterback. Not the kind to carry the team on his back. This Rams fan will root for them if they play the Whiners in the playoffs, though. We made up for those horrible '70s playoff losses with the beat down that Warner & Co. gave in the '99-'00 playoffs.

Shouldn't someone PING to a Vikings thread??

There is a Viking ping list???

I guess there should be, if for no other reason that we Viking fans could commiserate together.

I expect this year to be no different than the last 53.

But hell, who know's, maybe I have become so jaded that they will shock me and win every game in the playoffs with comeback wins. Sadly, if that happened, they would then be blown out in the Super Bowl.

Or worse, they would score 50 points in the first half, and then watch as the other team scores 70 unanswered points in the 2nd half to win the trophy by blowing out the Vikes by 20 in the biggest craziest comeback in NFL history.

By the way, it would probably be against the Bills or Bengals, two other teams who have had bad luck in the Super Bowl, but would wipe our face into the turf.

See? I'm jaded. I've been in an abusive relationship with the Vikings for 55 years, and I keep coming back thinking they will still love me and treat me well, just to be abused and put back into the mental asylum.

55 years of following the purple and gold, and 55 years of letdowns. It has gotten so bad, I TIVO all the games, and only watch if know they won. Saved me from watching them get trounced by Philadelphia and Dallas this year.

I wonder if I could sue them for mental abuse?

You have one hope. If the Bills make it, too. One of you has to win. Admittedly, my money would be on the Bills.

Well you just keep winning, so that my Lions play you in the first round. I’d rather not have to go to San Francisco.

So tell me, how did it makes you feel that Matthew Stafford won a Super Bowl with the Rams?

How, could they let him go???

Sounds like something that only happens to the Vikes.

Tony Dungy leaves and eventually wins a Super Bowl, while we kept Dennis Green (my wife called him rerun) who kept choking with huge blowouts in the NFC Championship games.

Hell, we even gave Moss away to the Raiders, just to watch him at least get to the Super Bowl with New England and the 49ers.

By the way you are right, because many times when two teams meet in the regular season and then later that season in the Super Bowl, the one that lost in the regular season usually wins.

The last times was the Giants against New England. NY stopped them from matching the Dolphins perfect Season even.

Don't I know it. In the Rams first two Super Bowl losses, the Rams beat BOTH teams in the regular season. The Rams beat the Steelers 10-7 before losing 31-19 in Super Bowl XIV, and after the Rams beat the Patriots on a wet wintry night game in Foxboro in the 2001 season, the refs and Pats combined to beat the Rams in the Super Bowl on a last second field goal.

I'll feel real peachy about it when we get that Rams draft pick.

You obviously missed the years of Tarkenton

By the time Tarkenton showed up, we had lost Paul Krause.

Buffalo Bills fan here. We know disappointment as well as anyone.

They are changing the area code in Western NY to honor the Buffalo Bills Super Bowl history. Changing from 716 to 044

Q: What is the difference between a dollar Bill and a Buffalo Bill?
A: You get 4 quarters from a dollar bill.

Have to keep a sense of humor. But I don't need to be on this ping list.

Go Bills!

Joe Kapp’s team had better talent in more positions, instead of a few “superstar” ball handlers. With the rules back then, the only real superstar point maker we had (and needed) was Fred Cox. Refusing to negotiate a contract with Joe Kapp was the worst decision the Vikings ever made. Doing the same exact thing 5 years ago, was the 2nd worst decision the Vikings ever made (if we only had that defense now...). Giving up homefield advantage by moving inside, was the 3rd worst decision. If it wasn’t for purple helmets with the horns, I would have found another team back when I was 11.

Are yo talking about not keeping Case Keenum?

Or when they let Bridfwater go?

If it’s about the QB, I like Cousins.

Or is there another player you are thinking of?

We should have endured another season with Case and the team we had, just to see if we could get to the Super Bowl and win. Instead, we got what we deserved for PUNISHING SUCESS again, at a time when it was working. Cousins, and the money it takes to keep him, is not worth all the great players we lost along the way. I hope Cousins does as well in the playoffs as Keenum did. Because it’s all about “The Team”, isn’t it?

Well, Cousins finally has a coach who believes in his ability. The old QB coach he had in Washington, Kevin O’Connell. is now his head coach. This is the first year since his time with KO in Washington he Cousins has been allowed to be who he is. I never understood why they got Cousins. Not because I don’t think he is good, but because he never fit Zimmer’s offensive scheme. Zimmer wants ball control and a run game. He was perfect when he got there with Peterson. Unfortunately Peterson became his own worse enemy, and he was let go.

The way they signed Cousins , reminds me of the time Minnesota traded for Walker. Walker was North South running back. Yet Bernsie was a more West Coast type guy who ran his running backs East West around the ends. It was well know the best way to take Walker down was to turn him, because he was too big and fast to tackle him head on. So you tackled him to take his legs out from him from the side. Well if he is running to the right or left, half the problem of taking him down was already accomplished by the way Bernsie used him. The last years of Walker’s career actually suffered because in the last Yeats of his prime he was waisted in Minnesota’s west coast style offense.

Thus it is with Cousins. he is not the kind of QB who can sit back and with for things. You need to warm him. up and take chances. Once Cousins get on a roll, he is one of the most dangerous QBs in the league. look at his games in Washington, and you will see. heck, look at how he does once he is allowed to start rolling.

I loved Zimmer, but in todays explosive NFL, his old slow methodical ways do not do well. His end was written on the wall, the moment the league started cracking down on the way players can cover receivers. Look how the rules destroyed the best cover guy in the league, Xavier Rhodes. He could not play any other way, but they put an end to his type of play. Even Harry the Hitman Smith is not the player he was when he could nail a receiver daring to challenge the middle of the field. Heck, that is the reason for his nickname. However, unlike Xavier, Smith was able to adjust, but he has never been the same.

This is why it is odd how the referees are allowing players to hit Jefferson so much. They specifically changed the rules to destroy Zimmerman’s type of hard hitting defense that made him the defensive back genius he was with Dallas and Cincinnati. Yet, we see referees allowing hits to Jefferson that Xavier was specifically consistently flagged for, and thus ending his promising career. Some players can not adjust.

Can you imagine the way they would have ended the career of 90% of NFL defensive player in the “780”s and “80” if they implemented the rules they have today, back then?

NO, Zimmer could not adjust, and he never used Cousins as he should have. Keenum was good when we needed him, and after we were down Zimmer let hi open top, but he never ever had the talent Cousins has. Keenum would have been destroyed the next year, just as he was when he went to Denver. He is a quality backup, and as such he will be around a long time. But like Frank Reich was, he will never be a fulltime number one QB. In the right position and the right time, he too may win a Super Bowl like Reich did, but he did need to be let go.

Again, Cousins did not succeed, because Zimmer never knew how to uses him, and besides, we did not lose all those games because of Cousins, we lost them because the NFL destroyed Zimmer’s ability to run a defense. Look back, his defense became feckless and lost a lot of games where Cousins scored more than enough points to win.

The league wanted too become the NBA, which sucks now, and so too does the NFL suck. It is scoring league that is closer to what Canadian football is than what Zimmer knew. Zimmer was old school, and that is why him and Bud Grant for along so well. Mind you, as much as Bud liked Tarkenton, he would rather have ran the ball and play smash mouth football. However, unlike Zimmer, Bud understood the jewel he got in Tarkenton and went with it. Many do not know this, but that was Tarkenton’s Offense, not Buds. Which was type of West Coast before Walsh made it popular in SF.

I think we have the best chance at a Super Bowl win with this offense, this QB, and this Coach than we have since BU was coach. However, to do so, Kevin needs to get a defensive coordinator who will play a different Defensive scheme. More man to man, and get rid of the Cover 2. It worded when it was new, but today’s QBs are too quick on the release to be playing your cover guys off by 10 yards. Heck, even if they never get the long running TDs, the team will pick us to death, as we see all season. This is why all our games are close, the D canot stop the quick passes, especially since our DD line is relatively weak.

I stand by me prediction, we will miss the Super Bowl, and it will be because of the Defense. OH, come playoffs anything can happen, so I could be proves wrong, and I pray I am. But logic, and my understanding of a game I played and have followed for 55 years tells me we are in for a possible one and done playoff run.

Cousins doesn’t have the feet to get moving when he has to. Just the simple one or two step moves that Brady or Rogers make during every drive, Cousins is incapable of doing. He only feels pressure when it’s making contact. He gets hit more than any QB in the league. That’s going to catch up with him, just like the slowest, heaviest defensive lineman in the league and protocol removals. Then maybe you’ll admit that we’re still rebuilding.
