My first reading is that she getting ready to deliver was viewed by him as possibly encroaching on the possible rights of the family home.

He lives in the same residence and doesn’t mention a family, which is the basis for my thinking.

So, they were all living there. Probably some stupid fight over something trivial. He never grew up apparently, or she knew just how to push his buttons to set him off. Either way it was tragic for sure.
