Texans could have a dark, cold Christmas if an Arctic blast headed east continues its path.
Texas suffered a massive power grid failure in February 2021 after three severe winter storms and frigid temperatures stressed the grid. The grid's failure resulted in millions of Texans losing power, leading to a lack of food, water and warmth. The failure proved fatal, and hundreds died because of the outage. The failure dealt a blow to the economy as well, resulting in a loss of at least $195 billion.
Since the 2021 power grid failure, other uncharacteristic storms have hit the Lone Star State, but none have threatened the grid to the same extent. According to one meteorologist, that could change by Christmas.
WCNC Meteorologist Brad Panovich shared a forecast depicting temperatures for the next two weeks. Much of Texas will be subject to much colder than normal temperatures for several days over Christmas.
"The bigger story going forward is the Arctic blast that moves into the west first then pushing east for Christmas," Panovich tweeted. "The Texas Grid is going to be tested again."

I interpret your answer as “Jack $#!+” ...
I should have gone into power distribution instead of electronics. I’d certainly never lack for work.
Of course, the media acts as if only Texas could have power problems in the case of heavy snow storms and cold weather. All grids could have problems should extreme cold cover a large swath of the nation. Which, given it is winter, could certainly happen. Of course, winter will be blamed on climate change in the same way summer heat has been blamed over the past few summers.
LoL, we do have tons of work. I’m not Texas, but it’s everywhere.
In reality, we’ e been installing tons of reclosers, re-conductoring, Hendrix cable installation in high veg areas, and other jobs.
Between system hardening, new business, and green jobs, only so much can get done.
The high ups have their priorities, to which I am not privy to.
I do know system hardening improves SAIFI and CAIDI numbers, which is ammo for a rate increase case with the PUCs.
Fake news
Glad to know that some real improvement is going on.
I’m only in my 40’s, but I have work until I’m dead.
I sort of took retirement from 18-26 y/o, instead of later in life...
Here in the USA this is suppose to be the new normal.
You know the electricity and heat and a/c never go out for the politicians.
Just like the streets in front of their homes are always repaired.
What about Mayorkas’ Merry Migrants that continue to invade Texas? Won’t they be cold crossing the Rio Grande?
last time was a surprise
The problem becomes other states problems because of connectivity of the grid.
“We do have tons of work. I’m not Texas, but it’s everywhere”
Is the highly publicized recent sabatoging going to generate additional work?
I froze my @$$ of parked in a truck stop in my van in Texas in the winter of 75 on I 10. Had to fire up my Coleman stove to be able to crawl outta my sleeping Bag. This is nothing new. It was down in the high teens that night.
It’s really frustrating they won’t fix this, they knew about the problems before 2021 also. Happens in summer too
Instead they’ll blame “windmills” or immigrants whatever and Greg Abbott gets to keep his job because what other option didwe have
They need to get the moisture out of there natural gas systems. NG does not freeze in places where the climate always gets cold.
I’ve read they actually have done a lot to fix the problems. We shall see if they are telling the truth...
Until we started replacing some of our coal plants with these STUPID, UNRELIABLE, and UGLY windmills, we rarely had any problems! I can’t believe anyone in power in Texas listened to those goofballs, we should know better! Especially T Boone Pickens!!! Uggg!! So infuriating. We should NEVER have power issues here!
If someone went through the big freeze in Texas in 2021 and hasn’t prepared his home and family for the next one by now, then that’s on him.
You don’t know what you’re talking about (again). The Texas freeze had nothing to do with coal plants water pipes freezing. It was all the solar and wind, and gas supply lines freezing. Coal was the only thing that worked. Bribed Republicans closed numerous coal plants in favor of windmills and solar.
For someone, but not me. I’m a distribution designer, so I do from one pole outside the substation to the end.
