Pope Francis has urged Christians to spend less on Christmas and to send their savings to the people of Ukraine amid the war with Russia.
The Pontiff addressed crowds gathered in the Vatican for his weekly General Audience.
“There is so much suffering in Ukraine, so much, so much!” the Pope said.
“I would like to draw some attention to the coming Christmas, even the parties,” he said.
“It’s nice to celebrate Christmas, to have parties… but let’s lower the level of Christmas spending a bit,” he added.
The Pope then suggested that the money saved on the commercial side of Christmas should be sent to Ukraine.
“Let’s have a humbler Christmas, with more humble gifts,” the Pope proposed. “We send what we save to the Ukrainian people, who are in need, who suffer so much.”
“They are hungry, they feel the cold, and many die because there are no doctors or nurses at hand,” Pope Francis said.
“Let us not forget: a Christmas, yes; at peace with the Lord, yes, but with Ukrainians in our hearts,” he added.
“And let’s make that concrete gesture for them,” he concluded.
The Pope Francis’s remarks come after 70 countries pledged an additional one billion euros ($1.1 billion) to be sent to Ukraine.
Earlier this week, President Volodymyr Zelensky called for more funds to help his country withstand the winter ahead.
In October, The Daily Fetched reported the Biden White House announced a $275 million new weapons package for Ukraine, bringing the total to $18.5 billion sent to the country since January 2021…

Everyone is already contributing ‘gifts’ to Ukraine via tax dollars. Last time I checked, gifts should be voluntary.
FUGS
Thanks, but we’re routing our contributions through the IRS to fund Mrs. Zelynsky’s shopping spree....
So true! Why doesn’t he sell some of the Vatican treasures and send the proceeds to Ukraine.
And the pope might consider spending more time on Christianity and less time on Communism.
Apparently, the prayers for peace are over. It’s time for the Pope to do some fundraising for missiles for Ukraine. Perhaps the Pope will do a telethon for rocket launchers and tanks!
Yeah, I’m gonna skip Christmas and send my money to the Galician Reich because a fake pope from Argentina says I should.
10% to the pope?
Your 2005 liberal talking points about Christmas are clichéd and inaccurate.
But I agree with you about Ukraine.
Is he saying that to RUSSIAN Christians too?
My instincts tell me that if Francis is for Ukraine, I should be against them. . . .
Really? American Christmas is so commercialized as to be grotesque and sacrilegious. My mere acknowledgment of this fact is the real conservative viewpoint.
How exactly do you send the money to Ukraine? Do you just stick dollar bills in an envelope and address it to the Ukrainian post office? Who do you make your check payable to? Do they take Visa and MasterCard?
It does seem like a strange request , for someone to say spend less money on Christmas , and send the difference to Ukraine. Among other things how do you know your money will get to the people who really need it?
Implied is the intent to send money to the Ukraine is only to be done AFTER you’d tithed your money to the Catholic Church.
Like the little-big guy in the White House, this guy wants his 10 percent.
Not knocking the Catholics.
The current Pope would NOT and does NOT want to have his monies messed with because he has bills to pay, people to support.
The pontiff can shove it in his pointed hat.
Over commercialized, I agree. It’s sad and pathetic how little our modern civilization celebrates Christmas, with almost no thought of the point and purpose of the Holiday’s true Christian meaning.
Most people give no thought to Christ, or more typically now days, deliberately avoid any mention of him on his birthday to avoid offending the perpetually butt hurt and noisy segment of our population.
However, that is not pagan.
When most people refer to a “pagan celebration of Christmas”, they’re referring to the customs, iconography and rituals of the traditional Christmas season. Christmas tree, celebrating in December, Santa Claus, Etc.
Those things do have a Christian origination source. But it became fashionable years ago to claim that all our Christmas celebrations were based on pagan rituals, or were modified to more closely resemble them.
That’s what I was referring to.
That’s not even funny.
We ARE spending less on Christmas.
AND ..
We ARE sending money to Ukraine in the form of our tax dollars.
