Ah those rascally British. It's like they have a different way of saying everything. I wish they would learn English.
As a totally random thought, I remember one explanation for some Britishisms was that they had their sense of scale inverted. They might refer to World War I as "a bit of a row" while describing two toddlers fighting over a toy as "the most dreadfully frightful row."
