Don Christopher, the founder of Christopher Ranch and co-founder of the world-famous Gilroy Garlic Festival, has died.
Christopher died on Monday, Dec. 12, surrounded by his family, according to a press statement from Christopher Ranch.
"His love for his employees, for his community, and for his family was evident every single day, and he will be remembered for his steadfast commitment to making Gilroy a better place," said Ken Christopher, executive vice president of Christopher Ranch.
In 1956, Don founded Christopher Ranch, which has turned into the nation's largest garlic company and the largest private employer in Gilroy.
In addition, he co-founded the world-famous Gilroy Garlic Festival, which was attended by millions and fundraised for non-profits that helped the community and city of Gilroy.
"There is no doubt that his legacy will endure through future generations, as he made the Garlic Capital of the World something truly special and made a difference in countless lives through his philanthropy," said Ken.
Don Christopher was 88.
Christopher Ranch runs a garlic cartel, set up by using lawfare and gaming US anti-trust law.
They filed anti-dumping cases against all Chinese import producers, except for one - which they defends before Dept of Commerce, and for whom Christopher sells product. Together, they set the import volume, and rig the market price.
Pretty smart, actually.
Artichokes = Castroville.
Yeah.
Heard about it early today.
Really nice guy.
Artichokes are Castroville
I worked around the west from 1973 to 1976 and worked at the Moss Landing Power Plant for a bit in 1976. I never had an artichoke! Then I worked overseas for a couple of years and, while in Chile in 1977, a family I was visiting served steamed artichoke leaves with mayo. I was ignorant about how to eat the flesh off the leaf, so I put the whole thing in my mouth and nearly gagged on all the strings! Everybody had a great laugh and then taught me the proper technique for taking the flesh off the leaf with ones teeth. I was SO embarrassed.
Imagine all that time in and around the Artichoke Capitol of the World and never having eaten one until I got to Chile.
I’ve been at our Idaho place since the end of May and the deep freeze and snow has set in. Brrr. I’m going back to our Bay Area place in January for several months and will get all around the area from Big Sur to Monterey up to Santa Cruz and HMB. Looking forward to getting back. My wife wants to stay here in Idaho to go skiing. I want warmer weather and more sun!
.
Watsonville is (one of) the supposed 'Strawberry Capitals of the World' -
and home of the Watsonville Strawberry Festival.
When I lived in Oregon I used to anticipate the trucks rolling up I-5 from California loaded with them.
Every year I would buy lots of flats of strawberries - until I was sick of strawberries -
then I would not buy any more for the rest of the year.
YES it is possible to get sick of strawberries!

We’d pick up a handle of vodka at Casa de Fruta for the trip down I-5 to San Diego in 4th July weekend. Long time ago.
