Don Christopher, the founder of Christopher Ranch and co-founder of the world-famous Gilroy Garlic Festival, has died.
Christopher died on Monday, Dec. 12, surrounded by his family, according to a press statement from Christopher Ranch.
"His love for his employees, for his community, and for his family was evident every single day, and he will be remembered for his steadfast commitment to making Gilroy a better place," said Ken Christopher, executive vice president of Christopher Ranch.
In 1956, Don founded Christopher Ranch, which has turned into the nation's largest garlic company and the largest private employer in Gilroy.
In addition, he co-founded the world-famous Gilroy Garlic Festival, which was attended by millions and fundraised for non-profits that helped the community and city of Gilroy.
"There is no doubt that his legacy will endure through future generations, as he made the Garlic Capital of the World something truly special and made a difference in countless lives through his philanthropy," said Ken.
Don Christopher was 88.

On the way home from pistol competition one evening we stopped in Gilroy for gas. Asked the old-timey gas station operator, “What is that smell?” “That,” he replied, “Mister, is the smell of MONEY!!!”
Strawberries (Watsonville), Lettuce (Salinas), Artichokes (I forget). Each town had a specialty.
And the one-worlders think they can do agriculture better than the farmers!

Entire town smells like garlic.

Artichokes is Watsonville.
My grandparents lived there.

I grew up eating artichokes and thought everyone did. My husband from Pennsylvania had never seen one, let alone eaten one. He loved them until the day he died, I cook them often - like 'em plain.

Sheesh - and I go through there about once a month.
Distracted at home - dinner time and everyone is demanding my attention, including the dogs and cat.
Got several jars from Christopher Farms in the fridge right now - crushed and whole cloves.
Have a trip planned through Gilroy in a few weeks - always stop at Casa De Fruta.
