Western Scientists Cheered On China’s Covid Repression
WSJ ^ | 11 Dec 3033 | Allysia Finley

Many public-health elites still won’t admit it was a mistake for the West to adopt Beijing’s strategy.

China’s zero-Covid policies have recently come under criticism from public-health leaders—including those at the World Health Organization—who once held them up as a model for the West. “China’s success rests largely with a strong administrative system that it can mobilise in times of threat, combined with the ready agreement of the Chinese people to obey stringent public health procedures,” the Lancet editorialized on March 7, 2020. Western countries, it added, “must abandon their fears of the negative short-term public and economic consequences that may follow from restricting public freedoms as part of more assertive infection control measures.”

That hasn’t worn well. The negative social and economic consequences of lockdowns in the West—from learning losses and destroyed small businesses to alcoholism and drug abuse—weren’t “short-term.” Nor were China’s draconian zero-Covid policies, which three years later are only slowly being eased.

...A charitable explanation is that China’s Communist Party bamboozled Western public-health officials by projecting competence and control.

The curve they flattened was the upward Trump economic curve. And not by chance.

China still dazzles western leftists who think it is a beacon of enlightened communism.

Neither is the case. They just lie a lot.

“Workers of the World, Unite! You have nothing to lose but your chains!” ...and maybe escape the deadly quarantine center.

—”They just lie a lot.”

Yes, they do, somewhat.

Good propaganda is mostly factual but slanted slightly to make it “feel” right.

I have been to China and they have much to brag about, underestimate them at your peril.

My fear is that one day my grandchildren will wake up and find the USA is a new Chinese property.
No, not like the foolish Russians killing, destroying, and making claims.
A private sale all on the up and up by American laws.

“The Capitalists will sell us the rope with which we will hang them.”

I went there regularly from 2006-2016. That was mostly during the reign of Hu Jintao. It seemed obvious that his economic liberalization fueled a great deal of their success. I believe it was this liberalization that gave them most of their current power. Xi Jinping has undone a lot of that, China will suffer a long decline due to this perennial socialist/communist idiocy - as will the U.S. if we follow in the path.

And against the Chinese are surest and best weapon will alwaysbe a dedication to our founding principles. Do that and the rest will take care of itself.

From my perspective, there has been continuous erosion of our founding principles here in DuPage County; once a bastion of conservatism.

And at the upper levels, there are very few dedicated to our founding principles. IMO it is the POWER/CORRUPTION nexus.

Abraham Lincoln: “Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man’s character, give him power.”

The Chinese had such a humane and woman-empowering approach to abortion that the medical profession couldn't help but applaud them for similar efforts with regard to COVID.

You are unfortunately correct.

Lincoln also said

As the patriots of seventy-six did to the support of the Declaration of Independence, so to the support of the Constitution and Laws, let every American pledge his life, his property, and his sacred honor;--let every man remember that to violate the law, is to trample on the blood of his father, and to tear the character of his own, and his children's liberty. Let reverence for the laws, be breathed by every American mother, to the lisping babe, that prattles on her lap--let it be taught in schools, in seminaries, and in colleges; let it be written in Primers, spelling books, and in Almanacs;--let it be preached from the pulpit, proclaimed in legislative halls, and enforced in courts of justice. And, in short, let it become the political religion of the nation; and let the old and the young, the rich and the poor, the grave and the gay, of all sexes and tongues, and colors and conditions, sacrifice unceasingly upon its altars.

It is critically important that we all remain active preachers of this religion in all walks of our live. And it is why FR and Jim are so important.

Western countries, it added, “must abandon their fears of the negative short-term public and economic consequences that may follow from restricting public freedoms as part of more assertive infection control measures.”

This claim is made without a shred of scientific evidence that lockdowns would help.

Of course they did. Many scientists are navel starers. They know everything there is to know about small little things that no one else knows. They have no concern about anything outside of that limited range. If they see a problem within their limited sphere, they are concerned. Human factor doesn’t matter.
