Why do they always preface “attempted” robbery? It’s an armed robbery. A robber. Not a “would be” robber either, another wretched phrase, though not as bad as “robbery gone bad”.

Notice they are careful to specify the victim has a “legally owned” gun, but they didn’t care to point out the robber in all likelihood has an illegal weapon, most likely a felon in possession to boot. It just seems strange the journalistic contortions they weave, when it’s actually easier to write clearly.

"The restaurant worker was struck, hit the ground. As he was coming back up, he drew his own legally-owned firearm and fired three shots at Mr. Hickey. Mr. Hickey was struck twice and fled on foot."

Officers were able to locate Hickey and transport him to the hospital, but he died of his wounds.
