SAN FRANCISCO – While millions of California families struggled financially in 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic, Pacific Gas & Electric’s CEO made over $50 million for leading the reviled utility with a history of bad investments and punitive energy bills.
the same time that CEO Patricia Poppe was raking in the money through direct compensation, the monopoly power company triggered the second largest wildfire in California history, estimated to cost more than $ 1 billion in damages, much of it from homes and entire communities burned to the ground
Documents filed Thursday with the Securities and Exchange Commission show Poppe received a total compensation package of $51.2 million, according to a recent report by the Bay Area News Group.

> Now, look at sports stars. Look at their salaries for 9 mos of work. Are they overpaid? <
That’s an interesting question. As a gut feeling, I suppose they are overpaid. But I don’t have a problem with that. A sports salary negotiation will be a tough give-and-take between the player’s agent and the team’s owner.
But that’s far less true in the case of a CEO. As you noted, a lot of quiet back-scratching goes on there.
“Some sort of moderation in needed in every case above.”
The question is, who decides, and how, what is moderation?
Big deal. CEO’s are not hourly level employees. They are paid by contract to do certain things within the contract. That money is set aside from the beginning and is there for the time frame it is to cover. CEO’s are not all powerful wizards that make it up as they go along.
The CEO for a power company is there to do what they have been told which may not encompass providing power, but doing what the contract says. And they are paid huge sums of money for the job because the people that make that decision say so. A perfect example is a former Disney CEO and that company is for entertainment, not to send you power to live.
Michael Eisner, who was chief executive of the company from 1984 to 2005, set a record for executive compensation in 1993 with a salary of $203.1 million. But he did what he was told or he wouldn’t be there whether the company floundered or prospered. That may not have been his job. But according to the people that approve the budget, he did.

Didn’t SF pay that much for an outhouse in their city? They like to vilify people who work
Just ignore them. I was called a noob and a leftist from du because I had an issue with Putin destroying 144 hospitals and severely damaging another 1000 medical facilities in Ukraine.

Ha, yes. I thought about that the second after I made the post.
One thing is for sure. In a free market system the decider cannot be the government. So I suppose the decider should be the person, or the organization, involved. Then in a way, it becomes somewhat of a moral thing.
For example, is it “right” for for a plumber to charge $1000 for a one-hour emergency visit, knowing that he’s the only plumber in town? I can’t answer that. Only the plumber can.
Thanks for touching base. Free Republic is a great place for conservative talk. It’s just a shame that some folks choose to ignore JimRob’s rule about no personal insults.
Awhile back I made a comment about NATO. That comment turned out to be very wrong. Someone here responded to me, not with an insult but with an explanation of why I was wrong. I really appreciated it as I learned something new.
Things like that are what make FR great.
I pay the CEO of PG&E one dollar per year.
I pay Sacramento a whole lot more than that.
Too bad Patricia Poppe is not the gov.
Did you know that starting in the 1980’s PG&E wanted to bury their power lines and California wouldn’t let them? See, the unionized linemen would have been put out of work. Can’t have that, can we? Because PG&E isn’t just a utility, it’s another Democrat jobs program.
Welcome to Free Republic! Glad to have you here!!!
If you think it’s a fact that I’m a leftist simply because I question CEO pay, then it’s probably best that we ignore each other in the future.
I just said that you are Leaning Left. If you whine about "greed," you're leaning left.
Who knows, though, you may be a leftist.
"I was called a noob and a leftist from du"
NOBODY “earns” that much. It is given to them by stupid compensation committees who are raking it in somewhere else. NOBODY is worth that much. If she left this minute she would not be missed. If the same number of linemen in compensation terms left the system would fall apart in days.
I’ve got that same hunch…
“For example, is it “right” for for a plumber to charge $1000 for a one-hour emergency visit, knowing that he’s the only plumber in town? I can’t answer that. Only the plumber can.”
Well I got a feeling that plumber will DEFINITELY NOT do that because it’s in his interest to not do that.
You might ask... Why not?
If he’s the only plumber in town, that must mean it’s a small town, which also means pretty much everybody knows him. What do you think will happen to his business and reputation once word gets out that he just heartlessly ripped off a neighbor in his hour of need?
In a free market the thing that sets the “right price” is competition and reputation. One of the huge benefit of the internet has been the product rating system that every business with a web presence has been “forced” to adopt.
Keeps the customer well informed and the seller honest and motivated to produce a better product at a lower cost.
Posting style reminds me of a (g plant) $hot $hill….one who is dugway into the deep$tate…..probably multi account trolls. Catching all of them, at once, would take a cat herder.
😉
Don't forget that PG&E emerged from Chapter 11 2 years ago, and with a crazy market like CA and the insane state regulation they face, there is a greater chance of them heading back than for most utilities around the company. The stock is no doubt restricted, and she faces some risk in compensation in that form over an equivalent amount of cash.
