Portuguese Bend?

When I lived in LA in the 80s, that area of the Palos Verdes peninsula was constantly sliding.

You’ll get that. Gravity, it’s not just a good idea, it’s the law.

We used to go there in the 60s. It was not very stable then, either.

This wasn’t Portuguese Bend, it was right at the border of Palos Verdes Estates and Torrance.

I lived in Torrance back in the 60s and 70s. I still have relatives in that area and take a drive around there sometimes. It’s always shifting and the road has to be repaired often. I remember homes that had large backyards facing the ocean. Many of those homes are close to falling off the cliff faces now. Very stupid the build anywhere near there.

Is that near Redondo Beach?

Sort of. Its on the south edge of Palos Verdes, closer to San Pedro.

Actually, the lyrics to "My Old School" are:

California
tumbles into the sea
That'll be the day I go
Back to Annandale

I remember driving there. You basically had two parallel roads, the one that was getting all curvy from the ground flowing underneath, and a second road being built to take the place of the first road when it became impossible to maintain it. So a constant construction zone. It was like trying to build a road across a glacier.

“Is that near Redondo Beach?”

Pretty close, ~1/2 mile. Redondo Beach ends, then there is a little strip of Torrance that touches the ocean, Torrance Beach. RAT beach is short for Right After Torrance. The slide happened right at the border of Torrance and Palos Verdes Estates.
