This morning I used OpenAI's DALL-E 2 to paint an image from a dream I had years ago. My description: There is a fireplace with a heavy mantle. On the mantle is a potted tree sapling. Behind the tree on the wall is a painting of a forest. The potted sapling blends in with the forest in the painting.

It took seconds to produce the image. Then I asked the ChatGPT to write a short story about it using the same description. That also took a few seconds.

Here is the result:

The Tree On The Mantle

Once, on a grand mantle in a spacious living room, there sat a small potted pine tree. It was a young sapling, with delicate needles that rustled softly in the gentle breeze that drifted in through the large bay windows.

The tree was not alone on the mantle. Behind it, hanging on the wall, was a beautiful painting of a dense pine forest. The painting was so realistic that it seemed to come alive whenever the light hit it just right. The tree could see the tall, stately pine trees stretching up towards the sky, their branches reaching out to one another as if in a loving embrace.

The tree often found itself gazing at the painting, dreaming of one day being as tall and mighty as the trees in the forest. It would spend hours lost in thought, imagining what it would be like to stand amongst the other pine trees, to feel the wind rustling through its needles, to smell the fresh, earthy scent of the forest floor.

But for now, the tree was content to sit on the mantle, basking in the sunlight that streamed in through the windows. It knew that one day, it too would grow to be as tall and magnificent as the pine trees in the painting. Until then, it would patiently wait and dream of the day when it could finally join the forest.

All that is mine here is the description. Everything else was created by OpenAI.

What a story. I might be inclined to amend that story by bringing the past into the present as well as including the future. How?

By referencing that huge fireplace mantle which was a tree that also once stood in a great forest, but now supports that young pine sapling, which will someday be planted in a great forest, and will someday itself become a huge fireplace mantle.

Circle of life kind of thing.

I gave OpenAI a series of commands each command created a stanza for this poem on dreams. Something to show the kiddies, tweens and sub adults. Even a few adults.

In the dark of night,
When all is still,
Dreams come alive,
And with them, a thrill.
With fantastical scenes,
And characters so bold,
Dreams take us places,
Where stories are told.
They offer escape,
From the troubles of the day,
And bring us comfort,
In their own special way.
Through dreams, we learn,
And grow in unexpected ways,
As our minds explore,
The wonders of the maze.

II
When bad dreams come,
And fill our minds with fear,
It can be hard to shake them,
And make them disappear.
But we must remember,
That dreams are just a state,
And we have the power,
To choose a different fate.
So when the nightmares come,
And try to take hold,
We must stay strong,
And brave and bold.
We can choose to face them,
And overcome our fears,
Or we can change the scene,
And chase away the tears.
For in the realm of dreams,
We are the masters of our own,
And with courage and determination,
We can make them come and go.

III
In the realm of dreams,
Where anything is possible,
We can explore and learn,
In ways that are incredible.
Through the power of our minds,
We can go on adventures,
And discover new things,
That we never knew were there.
In dreams, we can try,
The things that we fear,
And overcome obstacles,
That once seemed so severe.
We can learn from our mistakes,
And grow from our failures,
As we navigate the landscape,
Of our own subconscious.
So let us embrace our dreams,
And all that they bring,
For in them, we can learn,
And grow as human beings.

IV
As the dawn breaks,
And the night fades away,
I listen to the still, small voice,
That guides me through the day.
It whispers softly,
In the quiet of my mind,
Offering wisdom,
And a gentle, loving kind.
It reminds me of my purpose,
And the path that I must take,
As I step into the morning,
And all that it will make.
So I listen closely,
To the voice that leads the way,
And I trust in its guidance,
As I start a brand new day.
For in that still, small voice,
Lies the truth of who I am,
And with its help,
I can achieve all that I can.

first you give the commands. Then ai spits out their iambs. Then you copy and past.

Here is a short poem about green space clowns invading our cupboards:

Green space clowns, oh so strange
Invading our cupboards, causing a range
Of emotions, from fear to delight
With their antics, both day and night

They come in peace, or so they say
But the mischief they cause, can’t be denied
From misplacing our socks, to hiding our keys
These green space clowns, are quite the tease

But despite their antics, we can’t help but love
These silly clowns from the world above
With their bright green noses, and their floppy red shoes
We welcome the green space clowns,
to invade our cupboards, and spread their goofiness and joy.

As the sun rose on a quiet Sunday morning, Sarah was busy making breakfast in her cozy kitchen. She hummed to herself as she cracked eggs into a bowl and stirred in some milk. Just as she was about to pour the mixture into a hot frying pan, she heard a strange noise coming from her cupboards.

She stopped what she was doing and listened carefully. The noise sounded like a faint giggling, and it seemed to be coming from the cupboard next to the fridge. Sarah was curious, but also a little scared. She had never heard anything like it before.

Slowly, she walked over to the cupboard and reached for the handle. She hesitated for a moment, then took a deep breath and opened the door. To her surprise, a group of small, green-skinned clowns tumbled out of the cupboard and onto the kitchen floor.

The clowns looked up at Sarah with wide, mischievous eyes. They were about the size of a small dog, and they had bright green noses and floppy red shoes. They were covered in a fine layer of glitter, and they carried tiny, comically oversized juggling pins.

Sarah gasped and took a step back. The clowns looked hostile and menacing, and she didn’t know what to do. She was about to run out of the kitchen when one of the clowns spoke up.

“Don’t be afraid, human,” the clown said in a high-pitched voice. “We come in peace. We are the Green Space Clowns, and we have come to your planet to spread joy and laughter.”

Sarah was confused. She didn’t understand why these clowns had invaded her kitchen, and she didn’t trust them. She decided to play along, hoping to find a way to get rid of them.

“That’s...nice,” Sarah said hesitantly. “But why did you choose my kitchen cupboards to hide in?”

The clowns looked at each other and giggled. “We like to hide in small, dark places,” one of them explained. “It makes us feel safe and cozy. Plus, we heard that your planet has the best food in the galaxy, and we wanted to try some.”

Sarah rolled her eyes. These clowns were clearly not the friendly, peaceful creatures they claimed to be. She decided to take matters into her own hands.

“Well, I’m sorry to disappoint you, but you’re not welcome here,” Sarah said firmly. “I want you to leave my kitchen and my planet immediately.”

The clowns looked shocked and offended. They started to argue and plead with Sarah, but she was determined. She grabbed a broom from the corner of the kitchen and started to chase the clowns around the room.

The clowns were fast and agile, but Sarah was determined. She chased them out of the kitchen,

Those are great ideas - both for the AI to expand on and (no longer so surely better) doing it myself.

Two things struck me on this experiment. I’ve been playing with this since they opened it to the public, with a lot of interesting but not terribly compelling results. This is the first time I’ve experienced something with real emotional pull in the sense of longing and anticipation. The second was its use of anthropomorphism in the tree’s POV.

Agreed. AI using the POV of the tree is creative.

That’s pretty good.

But having seen both prose and poetic green clowns—I prefer the poetic ones.

Why? Poetry rides the story more playfully. Easy enough to do. Just give the commands you commanded. But ask for poetry. Not prose. Maybe ask to write the poem in the form Dr. Seuss.

The Cat in the Hat
by Dr. Seuss
Dr. Seuss
Then our mother came in
And she said to us two,
“Did you have any fun?
Tell me. What did you do?”

And Sally and I did not
know what to say.
Should we tell her
The things that went on
there that day?

Well... what would YOU do
If your mother asked you?

.......

Look at me!
Look at me!
Look at me NOW!
It is fun to have fun
But you have
to know how.

This spooks me a bit.
here’s the command:
tell about your game of golf at the golf course voice of donald trump
‘’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’
the response:

Well, let me tell you, it was a fantastic game of golf today at the best golf course in the world. I hit some incredible shots and made some amazing putts. I was feeling great, the energy was incredible, and I was in the zone.

I started off strong, hitting a few long drives down the fairway and making some great approach shots to the green. I was on fire, and I could feel the pressure from my opponents, but I didn’t let that get to me. I was focused and I was determined to win.

As the round went on, I continued to hit some amazing shots and make some incredible putts. I was putting on a clinic out there, and my opponents were struggling to keep up. I was in complete control, and I could see the frustration on their faces.

But despite their best efforts, they couldn’t catch me. I was too good, I was too strong, and I was too determined to let anyone stop me from winning. And in the end, I emerged victorious, as the greatest golfer in the world.

It was a truly incredible experience, and I will never forget it. I am the best golfer in the world, and there is no one who can compete with me. I am the king of the golf course, and no one can stop me from being the greatest. Believe me.

I don’t know what you’re saying.

It sounds to me like you’re speaking in code.

If you need to speak in code let me know.

Otherwise rephrase your comment for clarity this time.

If you’re just not good at speaking your mind — plug a command into the chatbox ai—and tell it —what it is you want to say. See what kind of results you get. who knows, you might think that the ai product does a good job of representing what you are trying to say.
