You have to remember the Ukraine conflict is two wars. The first special military operation with about 150,000 troops designed to pressure Zelensky into negotiating an agreement for autonomy for Donbas, de-militarization, de-nazification.

They had a tentative agreement in Istanbul at the end of March. Deep state stepped in and make Zelensky an offer. If he would dump the agreement and continue the war they would provide all the weapons and financial support he needed.

Zelensky took their offer...and the second “war” began. Proxy war of NATO vs. Russia. That one was unexpected and was not likely to be short.
