Pesto?! Ugh.
Years ago, I had a first date with a girl from Brooklyn. We were going to leave the city and have a little picnic. She packed only Pesto and pasta. Yuck!
When I lived in Chicago, I had a job at a pizza place where the two most popular pizzas were stuffed with spinach and stuffed with pesto. Double ugh.
God made tomato sauce for a reason. Use it. Basil is best as a minor supporting character.

Pesto is nice to drip on top of a pizza bianca - other than that it is a bit too much.
I make it when I grown too much basil, replacing pine nuts with pistachios.
