It baffles me that the smartest and richest man in the world would not know who Baker was.

It's possible Musk knew exactly who Baker was and laid a trap for him. Once Baker bit, Musk could fire him without having to pay the golden parachute he no doubt had in his contract.

Keep in mind that Musk took Twitter private.
Baker didn’t resign at that point so Musk HAD to trap him to get rid of him.
His contract was with a BoDirectors that no longer existed.
The contract was not nullified at the change because of the parachute and time-certain of the contract (not open ended).
Meaning that there are other FTEs with contracts, too.

Baker stuck around to do as much triage and damage as he could.
There could be others.
