Two of these were not quite clear to me: flavanol and genistein.

With flavanol you think of the color in fruits and vegetables but not a particular supplement. Is there such a thing as a flavanol supplement?

I’ve never heard of genistein. What is it?

It’s one of the sterol compounds in soy (from memory).

Flavanols are in tea, blueberries, grapes, etc. They are a commonly talked about antioxidant.

It’s hard to believe beta carotene is bad for you. Especially since it’s often part of the blue zone diet.

Yeah, I have to pass flight physicals for reserve status and HBP or BP meds are an immediate flunk due to our G forces. HBP is genetic in my family, fitness level being largely irrelevant.

So, I take a giant handful of garlic, niacin, fish oil, various aminos, and basically ever herb, veggie, fruit extract or whatever to keep my BP down. It’s 128/74 this AM.

So it is possible to do it. Certainly cost more than lisinopril, but no choice and it’s probably fixing underlying issues.

Also have zero calcification, after having pretty good calcification on a test, fixed that in 90 days with an aggressive form of vitamin K (super k) from life extension. Doc said it was not possible to reverse, so he’s claiming the first test was wrong.

Even before the debacle of the last two years it has become increasingly clear to me that while doctors are useful, people need to think critically about their health care and not blindly accept as infallible messiah’s.

Unfortunately I think you can say that most doctors thing they are entitled to that level of deference. Trying to have a simple human conversation about some treatment tends to produce some very unbecoming and unreasonable behavior.

Vitamin C, Vitamin D, Vitamin E and selenium showed no effect on long-term cardiovascular disease outcomes

OK, but don't leave them hanging like their no good. C D and Selenium strengthen the immune system.

I think we should take supplements that contain carotenoids - as many carotenoids as possible - not just one (isolated) beta carotene.

Same with the B's - they should be taken together.

It's something to consider...

(but if carrots are so good for the eyes, how come there's so many dead bunnies on the road?)

I had a very high cardiac artery calcium score but did quite well on a stress test. The chief cardiologist (the stress test was at a large heart-health hospital) said the CAC score was an indicator, but not an absolute predictor, of heart issues - and said there was no reason to ever have a CAC test again because there’s nothing you can do to lower it.

However, a few years later I saw a (Johns Hopkins-trained) integrative medicine doc who, when told him I was taking Vitamin K, said that’s the best thing I could take for calcification. I take two Life Extension Super K’s per day. What is your dosage?

[L-Arganine, Taurine and things like beet root are involved with making NO2 which relaxes the arteries. They’re good for people on BP meds —- BUT you have to be very very careful as they will typically lower blood pressure over time.

So you can end up with too low blood pressure.]

If you don’t mind sharing, how much l-arginine and and taurine do you take daily/was recommended?

Reversed mine the same way. Asked my doc if he wanted to know how. He didn’t. I think he was embarrassed as he told me that it was irreversible. They’re high paid techs and you have to manage your own health. They’re losing credibility as the current regulatory/government/insurance (and they’re all one) regime just has them following a script. No thinking allowed.
