As a former prosecutor and criminal defense attorney, and who is now a state and federal certified investigator, these parents need to stop with all this information release. They could very well compromise the investigation. As I prosecutor or investigator I would be livid about all these releases. And, I would stop briefing the parents. As a defense attorney, I would be eating this up and preserving all this information. It could well be strong evidence to muddy the waters in a trial if the killer(s) are ever apprehended. This day and age of private investigations by family and podcasters has been bad for ascertaining the truth in these cases. Shut your mouths, and leave the investigating to the professionals who have the power of government and the courts to do their job.

Agree. I appreciate their frustration but you have to let the pros do their job.

Well stated. I’ve been shocked at the loose lips on family members. Didn’t anybody brief them on how to behave, how to keep their mouths shut, and how the case can be tainted if they blab? Who could be convincing them to talk? Reporters? People with nefarious designs?

Or is it possible that the slip of the tongue by the parent was actually planned by the investigation team? Might it be a trap to catch the killer?

Actually, this dad has not said anything that would advance the investigation, quite the opposite. Why does the public need to know the two girls were sleeping in the same bedroom, or the perp came in through the sliding glass door, or certain people have been cleared, different manners of death, and now a tip on something mail related. These seem to be really important INTERNAL investigation details.

Wonderful post. Good to know how things work. Thanks.

Is there a way to get the message to the parents?

>>leave the investigating to the professionals

In 1995, I tried to involve myself with the detectives of the Keller, Texas PD in the death of my buddy. I was threatened with arrest if I attempted to show up at the Keller PD station.

Four months later I got a interview with the Tarrant County ADA and her investigator and presented a piece of evidence that I found in the middle of their crime scene after the house was released back to his wife.

Her Professional investigator was able to use the evidence to build a Capital Murder case which was successfull in prosecution.

The four Keller, Texas PD detectives were not invited to the trial due to neither the defense nor prosecution wanting their BS testimony.

Well stated. I get that the family is distraught, but they need to be more careful with their statements.

“leave the investigating to the professionals who have the power of government and the courts to do their job.”

YGTBKM. Maybe 20 years ago you could trust cops to “do their jobs” but not anymore.

I took a fascinating course in criminalistics a few years back, and probably my biggest "takeaway" from the course is that bad people can leave an astonishingly large amount of evidence at and near crime scenes.

My inclination is, thus, that the forensic specialists likely know much more than they let on, and for excellent reasons of case building, accomplice i.d. and others, they choose to time pulling peeps in until it's most prudent to do so..

I feel for the frustrations, especially among fam and friends, however yes, this is a great time for folks w even a bit of info to avoid yakking to the press or friends.
