‘Nobody gonna keep from my smokes.’ was followed by pulling his oxygen mask off and lighting up as the pure oxygen pumped out. All he got was minor singe burns but the blast set the room on fire and led to a mass evacuation of old Charlotte Memorial Hospital.

The reason oxygen is so dangerous is not because it burns, it doesn't, it allows other things to burn more rapidly. Pure O2 won't go bang in a fire, but anything that is flammable can burn hotter and faster because of its presence.

Yup, you got that right. Things can heat up without O2. But add O2 and BAM!, thing blow up in a flash.
