The cheesesteak is a sandwich beloved by many. It's a quintessentially American meal that comes from one of the most historic U.S. cities: Philadelphia. Now, nearly a century after Philly restaurant owner Pat Oliveri (owner of Pat's King of Steaks) created it, the cheesesteak is an essential part of American food culture

Dang! It’s been a few years for me. Guess I shouldn’t be surprised. We have one right here in Hazel Park with great customer service and I always get greeted by the owner. I’d like to keep him in business but eating out is getting really expensive. So is eating in, for that matter

Jersey Mikes cheese steak SUCKS. Sub Galley or Crow Point Pizza in Hinham Ms made a far far superior product. Cheese Whiz belongs in elementary school snack boxes. Us food snobs detest chain sub shops.

Half these bozos wouldn't know a cheesesteak from a subway sandwich.

Cheez Whiz...seriously?

John Kerry liked his with provolone

Who doesn't? Even he agrees with those who know cheesesteaks on that.

,i>The secret is the bread.

Absolutely true. If the bread isn't made by 1st thru 3rd generation Italian bakers, it won't taste right, no matter how good the meat and cheese.

Many good attempts but none are good as what I have gotten in Philly.

It's the bread. Sarcone's bread.

Not to be an a-hole, but Kerry asked for Swiss, Prooelone is acceptable, but cheez whiz is the cheese of choice.

Yes, cheez whiz was the only way when I was in college in Philly. Pat’s and Geno’s were still “hole in the wall” places we could go to without facing throngs of tourists and oh, the deliciousness that came from those! They were well known then, but hadn’t expanded as I’ve heard they’ve done now.

There was also a cheesesteak place around 5th and Walnut that rocked my world. The name escapes me.

The Navy Yard? My brother was stationed there. Also did a tour on the U.S.S. Biddle.

The first time was when my ship , the USS Lawrence, was there for overhaul and the 2nd time when I served aboard the USS Clifton Sprague which was homeported there.

I lived 12 years in Maryland, not far from Baltimore. Yet, the best cheesesteak I’ve ever had was at a food truck at a gun show in Oregon.

In case no one else has mentioned it, NOT Geno’s in Philly. The ace is a total tourist trap. Jim’s is good.

Headed for my local Jersey Mike’s Tuesday evening to check it out.
