Hong Kong did the blank paper or poster thing after chicoms squelched their freedoms.

Chinese are following suit. They also have sung some of the same songs Hong Kongers sang, e.g. Do you hear the people sing.

I never liked the A4 size. The proportions aren’t right. I know it is scientific and wastes less paper, etc. But it is feels as bad as buy fish in Canada by the 100 gram.

Interesting article on 8 1/2” by 11”.

I will thank my half-Dutch wife.

I would love to see legal size phased out. it doesn’t store nicely in the magazine holders I used to store documents in folders.

Ha!

“I would love to see legal size phased out. it doesn’t store nicely in the magazine holders”

Yes, one has to fold up the bottom half of the sheet.

The author is too clever by half. China doesn't use the U.S. ISO paper size A4 as "letter" size paper, it uses their own defined size "D4"

It is completely encouraging for them, and discouraging for us by comparison.

I am currently dictating and audiobook about Dr. Joseph Warren, one of the “Sons of Liberty” (associating with Revere, Hancock, Adams, etc) and it has made the contrast between the totalitarians that many Americans seem to pine for in our policies now, what we see a longing for in China for those oppressed by the Communists, and what it was back in 1770 in the US Colonies.

The ringing endorsement of Liberty back then, is manifested more closely by the oppressed Chinese than it is in the entire American Left. Apparently, the US National Anthem has become a staple for those oppressed, as it should be. But in our country, we have people trying to bar the playing of the National Anthem so people can’t hear it.

That contrast saddens me more than I can say.

Well... ...scuse me for saying so but telling everyone what the blank sheets stand for is nothing short of ordering yourself a nose fleet of government tanks to run you over! Js...

Back in the Netherlands of the 1660s, the Dutch invented the “two-sheet mold” for making paper by hand. A “vatman” would submerge this wooden-framed mold into a vat of paper pulp, then pull it out and let it dry into paper.

It’s said that the average two-arm stretch of these vatmen was 44 inches, which dictated the width of the mold. When you cut 44 inches in half two times, you get four sheets that measure 11 inches long.

As for the front-to-back measurement of the mold, the Dutch settled on 17 inches. The exact reason isn’t known, but it may have had something to do with how they applied their watermarks on the paper, or simply with maximizing efficiency. In any case, dividing 17 inches in half leaves you with two 8.5”x 11” sheets.

So be it from the past.........
