VAIN, SELF-SERVING VANITY: Recommendations on Sirius XM?
Vanity ^ | 11-27-2022 | Vanity

One just stumbled into a trial period of Sirius XM.

Any recommendations?

Astute political/historical/current events talk programs?

New music? Contrast with the same stuff on the FM dial... all genre considered...

Comedy, just for fun, etc, lest one lose one's sense of humor listening to the news?

Get Spotify. Much, much better.

I don’t have or want ‘serious’,

but I would seek out OTR (old time radio)

the comedy was so doggone good back then.

so were the dramas and mysteries.

Price for the subscription is good.

No way to cancel the subscription later unless you do it by contacting somebody at the company - who will browbeat you in all ways to stay.

Sometimes easier to avoid that future confrontation and just not get the service - nothing all that special.

Once you use it you will never go back. Just know this... after your trial period they will try to zap ya with a $320 a year renewal. Just call them up and tell them you will not pay that and they will give it to you for about $120 a year which is a bargain, in my book. Maybe not yours, though.

Not a bad deal for your car. Terrestrial radio sucks nowadays. Either sports betting, all news, or cRap music. Sirius XM gives you a lot more options in your car and it’s a big plus if you do any amount of driving. No having to change the station every 50 miles due to loss of signal!

As far as in a stationary location (home, office), not so good. There are a lot more options out there, IMO.

I like having it instead of FM in my car, especially for long trips. I don’t have to worry about listening to local “bro country” or (c)rap stations.

The Sirius website only lists four channels. There's a Patriot Channel hosted by Breitbart.

I imagine there are much more, but that Sirius doesn't want to officially acknowledge them because users might misinterpret that as agreement with what is said on those programs.

If you have a favorite conservative on YouTube, BitChute, etc. then they might also have something going on Sirius.

My sense is that you're not going to get anything truly conservative as that would be too hot for Sirius to handle. Most likely NRO neocons, Cato Institute libertarians, or "say what conservatives want to hear" grifters is what you'll have a choice between.

Congratulations on your new car. I suspect it's your first one since prior to 2013 when a lot of car companies made deals to have satellite radio installed.

Binge listen now because you're going to let the free trial lapse without signing up. You're going to hear some songs you haven't heard in a while but the charm will fade fast. There's a reason you don't listen to those songs more frequently.

The problem is that although there are specific channels, they still "rent" content in the same industry and it's broadcast in real time. You have to listen to what they broadcast. You flip through different channels but it's the same songs on each and they're played over and over. Since it was mostly listening while in the car, it got stale very quickly.

I think Sirius gave me two free extensions before giving up. They sent me junk mail once a month for about two years and now I get it twice a year.

The satellite radio industry is so non-viable that XM and Sirius merged fifteen years ago (only six years after satellite radio started) because neither could make a go of it independently. Cellular platforms such as Pandora and Spotify, with a wider selection and personalized playlists, overshadow satellite radio.

I originally got it when they offered $75 lifetime service, when they were trying to avoid bankruptcy many years ago. Since then, I’ve purchased their monthly plan for other vehicles, but I’ve drop those since newer vehicles can use my lifetime service off my iPhone. If you do have to buy monthly service, I know that they offer it for half price and better. You simply have to ask, they are desperate, and they will deal. I think the most recent monthly price I had was $3.99.

As a long time Sirius/XM user for Politics I listen to 125 the Patriot Channel. For music the 60’s,70’s,etc.

If you go to their web site you can get the individual Channel numbers for the programs mentioned. There’s a lot of good programming to listen to.

I got SiriusXM free for three months when I leased my new Altima in August. I had thought about subscribing when they sent me a notice I’d get a special rate of $12 for the first year. By the time they added their fees and taxes, and whatever other crap they charged you for, it would have cost me over $30+ a month, which isn’t worth it since I’m retired, and don’t drive the car that often, and I don’t listen to music at home. For me, it wasn’t worth the cost. I spend most of my free time reading books, so have no time for podcasts or any other over the air programming.

If you say NO, as I did, they’ll hound you to death with snailmail and eMail, for months.

My 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee Supercharged HEMI V8 doesn’t need it. I have a USB port in the dash compartment to play a thumbdrive with 300+ songs I’ve dl’d from YT.

Not worth the price IMO, but my Sister likes hers in her 2021 BMW X3.

ALT Nation! 95% of it is new music and artists I had never heard of when I started it last year. I live in Colorado, so it’s a blessing to have this as an escape from what I call “Colorado Butthole music”. (Unless you LIKE to hear Sweet Home Alabama or the Eagles for the 30 gatrillionth time.)
