Receiving a call from the cruise ship at around 2:30 p.m. Thursday, the Coast Guard launched a multi-crew search effort by air and sea, Coast Guard Lt. Phillip VanderWeit said in a statement.
After the man was spotted by a crew on another vessel, an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter aircrew "hoisted the man onto the helicopter," VanderWeit said.
At around 2 p.m., the boat turned around to head back, Anderson said. Passengers were told their arrival time to their port of call, Cozumel, would be delayed, he said. Later Thursday evening, an announcement over the PA system informed guests that there had been a man overboard incident, but the ship had been released from the search and was resuming travel to Cozumel.

Very strange story. Most people who fall off or more likely jump off cruise ships wishing to commit suicide die. This guy was either incredibly lucky or there is much more to this story.

More than 12 hours treading water. After drinking. Sister notices his absence 12 hours after he went to the restroom.
Something fishy here.
Looks like he was in the water overnight and most of the next day. Good thing for him it wasn’t an Alaskan cruise.

I used to work for Royal Caribbean / Celebrity. I had to go on cruises about twice a year to manage IT deployments. Honestly, it was so automatic I didn’t do much other than lay in the sun during the day and play blackjack at night.
Anyway about 12 years ago I was on a celebrity ship, Solstice I think. Casino closed early because the clientele was older. I’m getting a snack around midnight and there was an announcement “all crew alpha alpha alpha port side. Ship starts a turn at the same time. (Seas were 8-10 feet.)
It took a solid 45 minutes for the ship to make a full circle back. In the meantime, you could see a flashing beacon out there.
And this is crazy: the spotlights were so bright that even from a few miles away there was a red dot. That red dot was actually the reflection from the overboard passengers bald head.
Alright so we sort of stop a mile away. A skiff (probably 25 ft long) pops out the side with three guys. It runs to the pink dot. Sits next to it for a minute and starts drifting away. 10-15 minutes later another skiff pops out. It runs out to the pink dot…. And makes its way back.
A buck naked 50-60 year old man is passed out. They put the skiff back in the boat and all the passengers and crew watching disperse.
The next day my team got the full story from the bridge. The guy was there to get married. He got rip roaring drunk and got in a fight. So he strips naked, stands on a rail near the bridge. When someone notices him, he jumps.
The crew deployed a beacon. That is how they knew where to find him. That was the blinking light.
When the first skiff got out there, he refused to get in. A guy reached for him and he punched the crew member breaking his nose.
The second skiff went out with the ship doctor. This is where I thought it sounded odd, but the bridge swore it was true. The ship doctor has a tranquilizer gun at his disposal. They shot the passenger and pulled him into the second skiff.
He got expelled from the ship the next day in Honduras. He was alone. his new wife, and all the family that came for the wedding stayed on the ship.

They were drinking and they last saw him at 11pm. I can see how that would happen. When you travel with people on a cruise ship you are not in touch with them all the time and have a degree of independence.

In the ole days he’d have been returned to the ship, run the gauntlet, lashed, then tied to the mast for a spell.
Customer service has ruined tradition.
On a navy ship many years ago before don’t ask don’t tell. Two gay guys in love who did t want to stay on the ship for the 6 month deployment. As we were pulling into port they jumped off the fantail while the ship was backing down. The screw was pulling water under the ship and these two clowns were swimming as hard as they could to stay out from under the ship. The pilot immediately ordered an all stop which saved these two from being chopped into shark bait. The tugs saved us from hitting anything else.
Needless to say they were fished out, handcuffed and shipped off somewhere for discharge. Hope they are happy together...
What was nature of his estate and will? Was sister expecting to get a $$$ Xmas?
