I think Ukraine has been on the ‘brink of annihilation’ close to if not more than 100 times going by how often these posts are made.
Ukraine is safe from annihilation as long as they have the means to deny Russians air superiority, which they are only able to do as long as the U.S. keeps Ukraine supplied with effective air defense systems.
Russia isn't going to risk their heavy bombers over Ukraine if they don't have air superiority. These heavy bombers are part of their nuclear deterrence and they can't afford losing them.
If the Russians ever gain air superiority, the war will be over quickly. Ukraine will be turned into Grozny.
Until then, it's kinda mired into a stalemate and will likely stay as such through winter.
