China is developing a nuclear system that will be used to power its lunar station planned to be developed on the Moon's South Pole. Wu Weiren, chief designer of the Chinese lunar exploration programme, told Chinese broadcaster CCTV that this new system will fulfill the 'high-power energy demands' of the station, the South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported. Notably, the station is being developed by the China National Space Administration (CNSA) and the Russian space agency Roscosmos and is expected to complete by 2028.

The station's basic configuration reportedly consists of a lander, a hopper, an orbiter and a rover. Once the construction is over, the nuclear system will be used to operate the aforementioned instruments as well as for other tasks such as extracting water from the lunar surface and producing oxygen for astronauts.

While the Chinese expert refused to share details about the new nuclear powerhouse, previous reports have revealed that it would generate around 1 megawatt of electricity, according to SCMP.

Fixed.

They haven’t released GDP numbers for three straight quarters, and unrest is growing.
Wang isn’t taking possession of the Moon.

Who's going to stop them? Us? We're addicted to their cheap manufacturing and slave labor, and we couldn't even beat the Taliban because the military industrial complex wouldn't let us.

As long as they can use an electric wok instead of gas and a flame to heat it, they’re all set.

“The moon is a harsh mistress”.
It is the ultimate “High ground”.
Traditional “Missiles”are not required, just accept that simple rocks can be missiles.

Well, at least it’s beyond the next Five Year Plan.

Nothing is beyond China’s imagination!

No and who cares if they wanted to. Talk about a budget breaking boondoggle, I'm surprised we did not come up with it. Its kind of like beach front property in Bakersfield.

Despite what they imply there is nothing there of value. Sure we can and will put a base there for fun and exploration. But it's not going to be a money maker.

Let them waste their resources. Surface water on the Moon? Let them have at it.

The future is Elon Musk and Mars expeditions. He's already looking how to terraform Mars. Of course, that would probably take decades providing they can develope the technology, but he and his engineers are currently looking at the development of viable space vehicles and colonies.

They're gonna have to fight the Nazis and the Grays for it!

The Apollo and Amarid asteroids may provide better returns for space mining in the near future.

However, there are plenty of valuable things on the moon.

As noted in the article, oxygen and water are there. They are very valuable in space, and can likely be mined on the moon far, far cheaper than they can be transported into space.

While not usable at present, there is a lot of Helium-3 on the moon. It is likely to be a significant energy source in the future.

As the Neocons are learning in Ukraine, taking territory today is NO DIFFERENT than it was thousands of year ago. If you can take it, and hold it, YOU OWN IT.
