Three Oklahoma teenagers were killed when they broke into a house and were met by a homeowner with an AR-15. Now the grandfather of one of the teenagers is speaking out about his grandson’s death.
According to KTUL-TV, Leroy Schumacher, grandfather of 17-year-old Jacob Redfearn, believes the death of Redfearn was unjustified because the homeowner’s AR-15 gave him an unfair advantage over the three burglars.
Speaking to KTUL, Schumacher acknowledged that breaking into a house was “stupid,” but death was not the appropriate consequence.
“What these three boys did was stupid,” Schumacher said. “They knew they could be punished for it but they did not deserve to die.”
“Brass knuckles against an AR-15? C’mon. Who was afraid for their life?” Schumacher said.
The homeowner who pulled the trigger has not been charged with any crimes because police say he acted in self-defense. But Schumacher reinterated his belief that the consequences literally did not fit the crime.
“There’s got to be a limit to that law, I mean he shot all three of them — there was no need for that,” he told KTUL.
In addition to Redfearn, 19-year old Maxwell Cook and 16-year old Jake Woodruff were also shot and killed in the home invasion. Getaway driver, 21-year-old Elizabeth Rodriguez, was not injured but later arrested and charged with three counts of first-degree murder, one count of first-degree burglary and one count of second-degree burglary.
Police also say Rodriguez admitted to planning the burglary.
More from CNN:
Rodriguez went to police in Broken Arrow, a Tulsa suburb, and told them she was involved. Oklahoma state law says that first-degree murder occurs if “any other person takes the life of a human being during … first degree burglary.” Another condition is if a person causes the death of another person with “malice aforethought.”
In the end, Schumacher said he supports the Second Amendment right to bear arms but doesn’t agree with killing home invaders.
“These boys’ families are going to suffer with this the rest of their lives, we have to live with this the rest of our lives,” he said. “You can’t change history, but you can damn sure learn from it, and maybe some kids will learn from this.”
Dude, you break into someone home, steal their property, you deserve EVERYTHIG that’s coming back at ya. Everything.
A case of stupid that doesn’t get a second chance ... life is so unfair, but that’s life.
The other two kids would also be dead if he used a semi-auto shotgun.
I think you mentioned that actor’s lipstick thing once before and I tried to unthink about it. Yuck.
Now I binge watch Criminal Minds which I never saw even one episode from first run.
But now I imagine about 99% of the Dems around me in town are evil felons and I yearn to see them brought to justice and subjected to slow torture before they hurt more innocent victims. Worse if I see Leftist Media on TV.
Not a good thing for me.
Gramps, here’s the advice you should have provided to your grandson; “Never bring brass knuckles to a gun fight. And don’t break into somebody’s house and expect a friendly welcome.”
you want fair??? stay yer azz home...
If a criminal invades my home I hope the fight will be unfair in the extreme. I am armed in the extreme. My dog is useless except she barks like hell to the unknown at the door. She will tell me it is not my friend in the night.
Oddly she knows the sound of my friends cars and trucks. If such she barks a friendly hello that means come in and rub me. If she does not know the sound it is, “who the hell are you” and my master will tell me if you are a “good guy.”
A good dog is your friend and protector.
The homeowner didn’t hurt his finger pulling the trigger, did he? That would make the ending less happy.
I am old and can be beaten to death with brass knuckles and kicked to death by blows to my head. My Glock 17 of which I am most adept with a green laser and tactical light will kill you. It lives by my bedside as does an AR-15 close by. The AR is sighted in for 100 yards zero.
Sorry Leroy. The boys did deserve to die. They knew what they were doing with a home invasion. And now they serve as a warning to others not to do home invasions.
When you tell a kid that the teacher shouldn't have done that, or you didnt deserve that, you get adults who think " stupid shouldn't hurt ..much.." and you f around and find out your parents were wrong..
IE you play games with someone who wasn't raised by your Godless family.
Thankyou dad for never telling me " You didnt deserve that " EVER.
Let me guess. This was yet another son of obama being culled from the gene pool by an older white man?
How’d I do?
Stop. Or I will shoot.
Sounds pretty clear to me. What did they think would happen?
Totally demented reasoning. They all got what they deserved.
Yeah, three serial burglars get capped during a burglary, that does sound unfair. Obviously they understood the risks of burglary, or they wouldn't have had a getaway driver.
This story repeats itself every time.
Some dumb kid or kids break into someones place, and wind up being shot by a homeowner...
Then they find some relative to feed the “they did wrong but didn’t deserve to die” line for a story.
This wasn’t someone walking down the street with his gun looking for someone to shoot, they broke into their house... You break into someone’s house, you risk being killed... I know teenagers and kids don’t always think things through but this is an absolute reality of the consequences of making a very poor decision.
I highly doubt this homeowner wanted to kill 3 people that day... I am sorry for your loss, I truly am... However, trying to blame the homeowner for protecting their life, family and property is improper.
Hopefully others will learn from your grandchild’s mistake.
I don’t know if they got what they “deserved”, but they did get what can certainly happen if you break into someone else’s home.
If someone breaks into my home, I hope that the situation ends without me needing to kill them, however, don’t think for one second that I will hesitate to do so, to protect my family and person.
The grandfather’s a fool.
Three teens or anybody breaks into our home they get shot immediately. Crime is a dangerous profession.
Probably also a lifelong criminal.
