“Griner’s sophomore year of high school, an email went out to all of the athletic directors in the district explaining they had a hermaphrodite at a school who wanted to play on the girl’s basketball team. If any coach or athletic director objected, she’d be barred from playing. No athletic director objected because who cares about women’s high school basketball? That player was Brittney Griner. A year or so after Griner left Baylor (she did not graduate), I happened to be talking to one of those athletic directors who was now in a different town and district and he told me the story.
