Fans love that Tim Allen is reprising his role as Santa for the Disney+ miniseries, “The Santa Clauses,” but some critics are complaining he’s too much of a “right-wing Santa.”
The 69-year-old actor is one of the few openly conservative people in Hollywood. This makes it no surprise that critics zeroed in on a single line in the new “Santa Clauses” series that follows up on the popular “The Santa Clause” movie franchise, which premiered in 1994.
Allen again plays toy salesman Scott Calvin, who becomes Santa, but now he’s looking for a suitable successor to wear the red suit. One reviewer described the character as a “cranky, conservative Santa Claus.”
In one scene, Allen’s character complains about the state of modern society. “’Saying ‘Merry Christmas to all’ has suddenly become problematic,” he observes.
“What was going on in the minds of the writers as they penned this semi-political one-liner?” an article on The A.V. Club wondered.
DigitalTrends had a similar reaction to that moment. “To suggest it strips the story of some of its charm is an understatement, but with only two episodes to go on, the series’ plans for its right-wing Santa are almost certainly going to make or break the show,” that reviewer observed, also noting how Allen’s character seems “like he’s spent too much of the Christmas offseason watching Fox News.”
Showrunner Jack Burditt addressed the line during an interview with Deadline. The interviewer explicitly asked about the “lightning rod” quote and asked if there was any “back and forth” on including it. Burditt said the writers did consider the implications.
“Yeah, we did,” the showrunner said. “This is something that I just think is silly but then I’m like, I don’t know.”

Ask me if I care that they’re “offended”.....
FU critics and FU Disney.
They just cant stand a single word or sentence that isn't 100% leftist extremist.
Yes they were, but they are mad when the sun comes up in the morning
Poor babies. One out of a thousand (maybe ten thousand) Hollywooders are conservative and it sends them into a tizzy.
And the God’s Truth statement that you cannot say “Merry Christmas” without someone claiming to be offended is objectively true. How can they question that?
The insane libs have demolished our society and they wail about somebody occasionally pointing it out? Give me a break.
They’re offended?! They offend me on a daily basis and get away with it!!!!
Oh, for crying out freakin’ loud.
Many of us have stopped watching a lot of TV shows or current movies because we’re tired of the leftism in our faces. (And ratings do reflect this.)
And those stupid snowflakes have the audacity to whine about one sensible comment in a movie (that, while I like Tim Allen, I won’t watch because I don’t patronize Disney)?
They really do want total control of all content. They want to silence the smart people and ram their nonsense down everybody’s throats.
Don’t let them.
Oh my the pearl clutching!
What do these commie bastards think it’s like for us America-loving capitalists watching ANY movie or show for the last 40 years?
Every single one is a punch in the face to us.
Sounds like a critique I read on Gary Chapman’s excellent book The Five Love Languages.
The critic didn’t like it because the advice was “hetro normative”.
It was admitted the book had a good message, but it was unacceptable because it only included advice for men and women in normal marriages .
they will soon be asking themselves, “How come no one watches our new SantX ClausX movie?”
Santa can’t say “Merry Christmas”?
What the hell is he supposed to say?Ala Snack bar?
Critics don’t create. They just destroy.
Do what most people do when they don’t like something: change the channel, don’t listen, don’t read anything that offends you. Just stop crying about it.
If Santa was giving out drugs and gay porn the critics wouldn’t be mad.
Real life doesn’t work that way so they are just going have to suffer they like it anyway.
Why do they care about an old white guy with a European holiday tradition anyway?
“’Saying ‘Merry Christmas to all’ has become problematic,”
It shouldn’t be — but it is.
The left are so unhinged. When he says “’Saying ‘Merry Christmas to all’ has suddenly become problematic,” he’s talking about people not believing in Santa and Christmas in general. It has nothing to do with politics. Same situation in Elf when the people start singing carols to boost Christmas spirits. But they don’t complain about that one because the actor isn’t a vocal conservative.
The people who are allegedly mad about this don’t celebrate Christmas anyway. Maybe it’s not for them.
