I do recall from classes in Michigan, that Michigan got the Upper Peninsula from Wisconsin. Which did not please Wisconsin in the slightest.

The original plan was to continue the line that divides Indiana from Illinois due north, so Michigan would have had an upper peninsula but a smaller one that it got--the additional land (received as compensation from losing the boundary dispute with Ohio) turned out to be very valuable.

The line would have run through the peninsula dividing Green Bay from Lake Michigan--I don't know if Congress would have assigned that to Michigan since it is rather remote from the Upper Peninsula.
