Cis is Latin meaning "on this side of" (as in "Cisalpine Gaul" = Gaul on this side of the Alps). It's cognate with the English word "hither."

But "cisgender" as a way of putting down people whose behavior and attitudes correspond with what was always considered normal in the past for their sex is a fairly recent development.
