Nice observation. “Scientists” ain’t what they used to be, and one’s who are from Missouri seem to be becoming quite rare. (FWIW—Show me . . . )
About 25 years ago, some one used “Jesuitical” in a way that meant “not too bright” rather than the traditional “too clever by half.”
