The Command Staff has decided to expand the 47th Assault Regiment to the size of brigade.

All bureaucratic procedures regarding the expansion were recently completed, the unit will soon receive new weapons and equipment. After that, the fighters will return to the front. Ukrainian Ground Forces thus have a new brigade, the 47th Assault Brigade.

About the unit 47th Assault Brigade was formed as a battalion by Valery Markus and Ivan Shalamaha in April 2022. On June 28, it was decided to expand the unit to the size of a regiment. Along with the reformation, the unit received tanks and artillery.

In October, it was reveled that the regiment would be expanded again, this time to a brigade. Majority of the fighters are volunteers, who passed the military tests and later signed the military contract.

When I was a kid, I had an Uncle Ronnie. I remember wrestling with Ronnie on my parents’ living room floor, him in his flight suit. His Thai wife, my Aunt Khak, used to babysit me. I remember Dad coming home from Vietnam, with Uncle Ronnie. And Dad giving me a bunch of toy airplanes. I pulled out a MiG-21, and asked Dad what that plane does. He said to ask my Uncle Ronnie. Ronnie laughed and said, “It shoots down B-52’s”

Ronnie earned the DFC posthumously over Hanoi. He stayed with his stricken bomber to put steel on target, and was killed on egress. Ronnie was listed as MIA until some time in the 80’s, when what was left of him was returned for burial. He was 25 years old. Graduate of the Air Force Academy. Had a wonderful wife.

The only time I recall ever seeing my Dad cry was when I finally got him to go to the Wall with me. He knelt before all those names clustered in one place—18 in one night—and he cried and said, “I’m sorry.”
