The way it works is a letter stands for another letter. For example: AXYDLBAAXR is LONGFELLOW (does not apply to today's cryptogram).
Beware, the game is very addictive. If this is your first time, don't be intimidated, you’ll be solving them all within a few days. If you’re stumped, take a break and return to it.

Funny… I’m not sure if that tripped me up or helped me.
On the one hand, the seemingly improper grammar caused me to doubt I had solved that first phrase correctly…
But then it also may have been what triggered me to question my base assumptions.
I am not completely sure that LKFV isn’t a perfectly good collective noun, on second thought. It’s sounds more natural to me as is, rather than as you suggest, but I am persuadable.

I agree “kind” is collective even without the “s”, as in “mankind”.
But because it is collective, does that make it plural? I don’t think so.
For example, the words “lot” and “group” and “crowd” are also collective, but they are not plural unless one makes them so, by saying “lots” or “groups” or “crowds”.
Using for example, the collective “group”, (without the “s”) in a sentence with the verb “to be” - I would definitely use the singular: “There is a group of people outside my door” - rather than the plural: “There are a group…” or “There are group…”
And if that isn’t enough to convince you… I think adding a number above 1 to the sentence clinches the argument:
“There are four group of people outside my door” - that can’t be right.
