The extreme leftist Spanish government has drawn the rage of many in the country after it announced a commemorative postage stamp marking the centenary of the Communist Party.

The stamp, featuring the notorious hammer and sickle imagery, is to be launched by the state controlled Correos on November 14, with 135,000 limited edition copies with a postal value of 0.75 euros.

The move has enraged many citizens, who have directed anger at Socialist Spanish leader Pedro Sánchez, with some pointing out that the Correos is currently headed up by Sánchez’s former Chief of staff.

Others noted how Spain’s communist party has a history of cosy ties with the Soviet regime, involvement in war crimes during the Spanish Civil War, and has even expressed support for modern Communist dictatorships in Cuba, China, Venezuela and Nicaragua.

Spain’s current government is a coalition between Sánchez’s Socialist Worker’s Party and the extreme far left Podemos party.

The government was heavily criticised during the pandemic for instituting draconian mask, lockdown and vaccine passport policies.

A huge scandal also emerged when the elite of the Spanish business world as well as sports figures and celebrities were caught buying fake vaccine certificates in an attempt to maintain access to social freedom without taking the vaccines.

The Spanish government has also recently moved to institute energy restrictions in the name of battling climate change

We failed to teach 2 entire generations the evil of the failed system of communism and are now reaping the price.

Every kid knows the Nazi’s killed 6 million Jews, but nearly no one under 30 knows that Communism killed over 100 million people.

I can teach a small child how and why communism doesn’t work in minutes, it’s quite easy.

Franco did his best to get rid them but they seem to come back like cucarachas.

I have been to Spain several times. The Spanish Civil War is still fresh in the minds of the Spanish people. The atrocities by the Franco government with the backing of Nazi Germany are well known and remembered.

Yes the atrocities by the Communists and those that opposed Franco we also horrible. However, the general feeling was that the Soviet Union sent those resisting Franco ship loads of weapons. Communism has clearly not worked to move Spain out of poverty, then again, the EU has also failed to move Spain out of poverty compared to other EU countries.

My perspective is that Communist ideology in terms of economic theory is not popular with the people, but that those whose grandparents fought, died, and were tortured by Frano, have a soft spot in their hearts for the image of the past Communist Party.

When you visit Spain you are struck by the three different police forces. The local or municipal police (phone 092) are controlled locally. The National Police (phone 091) are under a centralized national control and are to deal with more serious crimes. Civil Guard (phone 062) are very military in orientation and under centralized national control.

During Franco the Civil Guard and the National Police were used by that government to oppress various parts of the County. There are still strong feelings against them at times, especially in those regions (Basque, Catalonia, etc.) that think of themselves as semi-independent areas.

A big part of the Spanish Civil War was how the Spanish Communist Party, took control of the Popular Front government. Part of the control was the use of violence against other Leftists. The most infamous was the destruction of the Anti-Stalinist POUM, Partido Obrero de Unificación Marxista. A major factor in the defeat of the Republican Government was this civil war among the Left. The Spanish Communist Party was following Stalin’s instructions and worked closely with NKVD and other Soviet security services sent to Spain.

Franco and the Spanish Army crushed a communist controlled shell government. Franco was utterly ruthless with the left which is as it should be. Unfortunately so called democracy was restored, which means leftists take over because they, like cock roaches never really go away. In Latin nations a right wing authoritarian government is the most desirable form. We in the Us are seeing what the Spanish saw during the so-called Second Republic. Politicization of every institution and its subordination to leftwing ideology along with organized terrorism towards all opponents. Franco was one of the great men of the 20th century and the removal of his regime was a disaster for Spain.

I lived in Spain for a while 25 years ago and what you say is true. I'd add that the Spanish sense at the time was that the Catholic Church supported and enabled Franco so they distrust the institution somewhat. As a result, though deeply religious they tend not to be churchgoers except for festivals, sacraments, and ceremonies.

And a funny Spaniard-talk-about-Franco anecdote. I was talking to a Spanish colleague about Spanish TV and I said I was shocked to see pretty explicit adult action on regular TV. He said 'yes, I know. I don't like it. But you see, Franco always cut movies up and now we don't want them to be cut at all. But to me I think it's bad because they show them at 11 or 12pm, when they children are watching."

Spain does things on it's own time!

Title could read: “Lack of concern among citizens as U.S. celebrates communist take over.”. Let alone postage stamps. Guess we need some ‘che’ or ‘billy ayres’ stamps? See tag line.
